Nintendo Crushes Metroid Prime Fans’ Hopes For Trilogy Remaster

Okay, so everyone’s been talking about *Metroid Prime 2* and *3* potentially coming to the Switch for ages. Seriously, gaming sites have been predicting it for years! But still, nothing. At this point, a *Metroid Prime Trilogy* on Switch feels like a total myth – like Nintendo’s very own Bigfoot. I’m starting to think it’ll never happen!

The Nintendo Direct in September 2025, where the release date for *Metroid Prime 4: Beyond* was announced, would have been an ideal moment to also reveal remastered versions of *Metroid Prime 2* and *Metroid Prime 3* to build excitement. However, fans only received an art book focused on the popular trilogy.

It’s strange that Nintendo hasn’t announced remasters of the later games in the series, especially after releasing a fantastic remaster of the first game last year. Are they holding onto ports for too long, did they cancel the project, or was the information we’ve heard incorrect? Either way, Nintendo seems to have let a great chance slip by – and it’s a real shame, considering the game’s story!

A Full Trilogy Remaster Has Been Talked About For Too Long

For years, rumors have swirled about a remastered collection of *Metroid Prime* games coming to the Nintendo Switch. Reports of this ‘Metroid Prime Trilogy’ have been circulating since 2019 – that’s over six years ago, well before the pandemic began. It’s been an open secret among industry insiders, journalists, and fans alike.

Rumors started circulating that the remaster was actually finished, and the game was just waiting for Nintendo to announce its release. It’s likely many gaming websites prepared articles announcing the *Metroid Prime Trilogy* at a Nintendo Direct, only to have to shelve them indefinitely when the announcement didn’t happen – I even wrote one of those myself back in 2019 for a different publication.

Rumors about this game resurface every few years, often starting with Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb. He actually predicted the remastered trilogy was finished as early as 2021! He even got a haircut after losing a bet that it would come out in 2022 – funny enough, *Metroid Prime Remastered* was announced and released unexpectedly just two months later.

Rumors suggest that *Metroid Prime 2: Echoes* and *Metroid Prime 3: Corruption* won’t be updated like the first game was. Even after *Metroid Prime Remastered* came out, people were still hoping to see those games on the Switch. The long wait is frustrating, and it’s getting to the point where an announcement might not even generate much excitement.

The Only Hope Left Might Be A Surprise Drop Around Prime 4’s Launch

As a huge Metroid fan, I was really excited during the last Nintendo Direct when they showed everything coming with *Metroid Prime 4: Beyond* – like that cool retrospective book and the new Amiibos. They kept saying “The Journey to Launch Begins,” and honestly, it got me thinking… could that mean Nintendo has even *more* surprises planned before the game actually comes out? I’m hoping so!

Even if we take that reading of events optimistically, it’s still unclear when remasters of *Echoes* and *Corruption* will be released. September would have been a perfect time – Nintendo doesn’t have any major new games scheduled, aside from the expensive *Donkey Kong Bananza* DLC. Releasing the remasters then would have given players around three months to finish the second and third games in the series, setting the stage nicely for the launch of *Beyond*.

It’s unlikely Nintendo would release a classic game alongside a brand new one. Releasing them too close together could hurt sales of both titles and take attention away from the new release – they wouldn’t launch a remastered *Kirby Air Ride* at the same time as the new *Kirby Air Riders*, for instance.

It’s unclear when or how Nintendo will release remasters of these games – maybe after *Beyond*, or possibly only through a classic game app on the next Switch. Honestly, at this point, the method doesn’t really matter. I’d buy any remasters immediately, but after waiting so long, it might be out of frustration more than pure excitement.
