Nintendo is once again taking legal action against someone accused of piracy. This time, they’re suing a Reddit user, u/Archbox, who is alleged to have illegally copied and shared “hundreds or thousands of copyrighted Nintendo Switch games.”
The person on trial is James C. Williams, also known as u/Archbox on Reddit. Nintendo claims Williams operates multiple websites that illegally distribute their games.

They appointed Williams as the main moderator for the r/SwitchPirates subreddit.
So, I found out that back in November 2024, this guy Williams actually got a legal summons after Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp did some investigating. But here’s the thing – he totally ignored it! Because he didn’t respond, Nintendo now has the right to ask for money without him even getting a say in it. It’s pretty crazy!
Even $4.5 Million is Nowhere Near a Fair Compensation for the Defendant’s Conduct
In a court filing on October 3rd, Nintendo requested $4.5 million in damages. However, they stated that this amount doesn’t fully cover the harm caused by the alleged actions.
As a huge Nintendo fan, it’s really frustrating to hear about this, but it makes total sense. The court papers basically said that because Nintendo is so successful and constantly comes up with cool new ideas for games and consoles, they’ve become a big target for people who steal their work and hackers. These people are just trying to profit off of everything Nintendo creates, which is just wrong!
Just last month, Nintendo also sought a $2 million settlement from Ryan Daly, who modifies and sells Switch consoles using a device called the MIG-Switch flashcart.

As of today, the court hasn’t made a decision in the case, and Williams hasn’t responded to the lawsuit yet. However, Nintendo still has a strong argument, and they are likely to win the $4.5 million they are seeking.
