Nintendo DS Series Returns With New Release 18 Years Later

A popular game series originally released on the Nintendo DS is back after 18 years. It’s easy to forget how incredibly popular the DS was – it’s the third best-selling video game console ever, after the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 2. Because so many people owned one, the DS holds a lot of fond memories for gamers, and its games remain special to many.

Fans who enjoyed the Mega Man Star Force trilogy on the Nintendo DS are in luck! These games are now available on current gaming systems, including Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. While there’s no Nintendo Switch 2 version specifically, the Switch version will work on the Switch 2 thanks to backward compatibility.

Capcom Classics

If you’re new to the Mega Man Star Force series, it’s a bit complicated! It’s called a trilogy, but actually consists of seven games. This is because each main game had multiple versions released. The series came out between 2006 and 2008, starting with Mega Man Star Force, followed by Mega Man Star Force 2, and ending with Mega Man Star Force 3. After that, fans hadn’t heard anything new from this sub-series until now, with the release of Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection, which includes all seven versions in one package.

What’s New With the Nintendo DS Games

This isn’t a remake or a simple re-release of the original games. Instead, these are enhanced versions with several improvements. You’ll find online multiplayer, previously cut content restored, better graphics and sound, lots of small tweaks to make the experience smoother, and a new control system designed for platforms without touchscreens.

The collection has been well-received by critics and players. Scores on Metacritic generally fall between 73 and 76, depending on the system. User reviews are particularly strong – on Steam, the Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection has a 98% approval rating, and it boasts a 4.93 out of 5-star rating on the PlayStation Store. While this collection is likely only for existing Mega Man fans, those fans are really enjoying it.
