Nintendo Fans Have Waited 8 Years for This Mario Game (And It’s Releasing Soon)

A new Mario game is coming soon, ending an eight-year gap between releases. Mario is one of the most recognizable and important franchises in gaming history. The famous plumber rose to prominence in the 80s and 90s, becoming the face of Nintendo and a key reason for the company’s continued success – his presence almost guarantees quality. What’s kept Mario popular for so long isn’t just consistently good games, but also the diverse range of Mario adventures available.

Mario isn’t just a platforming hero – he’s starred in all sorts of games, including party, sports, and racing titles. The colorful characters and imaginative world of Mario create perfect settings for these different game types, leading to many beloved classics. Mario Kart is a long-standing favorite on Nintendo consoles because it’s simple to learn, yet enjoyable whether you’re playing alone or with others. Mario Kart World, released with the Nintendo Switch 2, helped drive sales of the console, but it’s not the only Mario game available on the system.

Mario Tennis Fever Releases in February

Mario is back with Mario Tennis Fever this February! It’s the first new installment in the Mario Tennis series in nearly ten years, following the previous release in June 2018. As you’d expect, it’s a fun, over-the-top take on tennis featuring everyone’s favorite Mario characters. Players can choose from a cast of 38 characters, each with unique and powerful special moves to enhance their gameplay. The game also includes a story mode packed with unexpected and humorous events.

Following the success of Mario Tennis Aces in 2018 – which sold over 4.5 million copies and earned two Game Award nominations – Nintendo is releasing a new installment. Mario Tennis Fever is set to launch on February 12th, 2026, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2. Unfortunately, owners of the original Switch won’t be able to play this new version.

The biggest downside is the long wait for a new 3D Mario game. Although we’ve seen older Mario games re-released, fans are really hoping for a completely new adventure. We last got a major installment, Super Mario Odyssey, back in 2017, and we haven’t seen anything comparable since.

In contrast, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was released in the same year and got a sequel in 2023. We haven’t heard anything about a new 3D Mario game, though. It’s likely Nintendo is working on one, especially with Mario’s increasing popularity thanks to the animated films. However, they seem to have missed the opportunity to release a new 3D game alongside the movies, disappointing fans.

While fans are still disappointed, they can look forward to Mario Tennis Fever coming soon. It’s unclear if it will be a significant improvement over the last game – tennis games don’t have endless possibilities – but it’s still great to have a new Mario title on the way. Hopefully, it will be worth the wait!
