Sony and Microsoft have increased the prices of their gaming consoles in the US because of import taxes, but Nintendo currently doesn’t plan to do the same. According to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, the company aims to keep its hardware profits steady, meaning prices will likely remain unchanged unless there are major global shifts, such as adjustments to import tariffs.
Furukawa addressed concerns about rising component costs and their potential impact on the Nintendo Switch 2 during the company’s earnings report Q&A. He explained that Nintendo is exploring ways to lower costs in certain areas to offset these price increases.
Furukawa stated that Nintendo expects to continue making similar profits from its hardware for now, as long as major external issues don’t arise, like changes to tariffs or unforeseen events. Although material costs are increasing, they also foresee potential cost savings in the production of the Nintendo Switch 2 as they ramp up mass production.
We don’t anticipate the recent increase in material costs to significantly affect our profits. We’re committed to maintaining our current level of profitability.
Furukawa discussed the strong sales Nintendo is experiencing with the Switch 2. When asked if they plan to attract new customers beyond those who already own the original Switch, he explained that they’re currently focused on serving existing fans, but are also actively working on ways to appeal to a wider audience.
Currently, we anticipate that most people buying a Nintendo Switch 2 will already own a Nintendo Switch. However, we also plan to attract new customers by showcasing the console’s features through games and marketing efforts.
Furukawa explained that sales of the Switch 2 have been about the same whether purchased by people who bought the original Switch early on, or those who waited to buy it later.
During a recent Q&A, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto discussed the continued success of the Mario Kart series, particularly on newer consoles. When asked if a future game on the Nintendo Switch 2 could outsell Mario Kart, Miyamoto explained that Nintendo encourages innovation, but believes Mario Kart‘s sales record may never be broken.
According to Miyamoto, Nintendo encourages experimentation and isn’t afraid to try new things. He also believes that even with those risks, Mario Kart would likely remain a strong seller, making it difficult for any new game to outperform it.
