Contrary to popular belief, Nintendo states that Mario and Princess Peach are not romantic partners. Over the years, Mario, the iconic mustached Italian plumber, has starred in numerous games and become a household name, even for those outside the gaming world. Most of these games revolve around him rescuing or saving something, although there are exceptions like racing or party games. However, Mario’s main role is often that of a hero, with some blockbuster adventures to his name, even inspiring a successful film series with an upcoming sequel.
A significant aspect of the Mario universe is that Mario often rescues Princess Peach from impending danger, which reminds us of classic fairy tales where heroes save princesses, leading to romantic stories and eventual happiness. This has led some fans to speculate about a potential romantic relationship between Mario and Peach. However, Nintendo has never explicitly confirmed this, although they have occasionally hinted at it through Valentine’s Day posts and subtle references over the years.
It seems there’s been some confusion, as Nintendo announced that Mario and Princess Peach are merely “good friends.” This revelation, made via the Nintendo Today app earlier this week, left fans puzzled. While it’s possible for their friendship to be platonic, Nintendo has often hinted at a romantic connection between them in the past.
In the Nintendo Today app, it’s stated that Princess Peach and Mario have a strong friendship where they always lend a helping hand to one another whenever possible.

It’s possible that Nintendo might alter their approach in the future, though it appears unlikely given the strong emphasis on friendship within their brand. This focus could stem from the company’s family-friendly image, as many have even wondered if Link and Zelda might be more than just friends. Across their various franchises, this theme of friendship seems to be a recurring element.
Currently, we’re unsure of when exactly the next 3D Mario game might appear, but it seems it’s being developed for the Nintendo Switch 2. Given that Super Mario Odyssey was released in 2017, it’s reasonable to expect another release soon. With the next Mario movie set for release next year, there could be a strategic timing for the game launch, possibly coinciding with the movie for some effective promotional tie-ins.
