The Nintendo Switch 2 has been a big hit overall, but sales in the US haven’t been as strong as the company hoped after the holidays. Bloomberg reports that Nintendo is now planning to cut Switch 2 production in the US by over 30 percent.
The report highlights that despite the success of Pokémon Pokopia, Nintendo isn’t adjusting its overall sales goals for the Switch console. Instead, company leaders are watching to see how the game – and future releases – impact demand for the Switch 2 hardware over time.
So, everyone’s wondering if Nintendo is finally reacting to those crazy high memory card prices, but apparently not. The report says they’re actually making fewer Switch consoles because people just aren’t buying as many right now. It’s a demand thing, not a memory card thing, it seems.
The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 could be significantly impacted by ongoing global memory shortages, according to predictions from research firm Niko Partners, who foresee this as part of wider trends in the gaming industry throughout 2026.
The release of this report is particularly interesting because another report earlier this month suggested Nintendo is planning a new Switch 2 model for Europe with a battery that’s simple to replace. According to Nikkei, a Japanese publication, Nintendo appears to be watching how much consumers care about the “right to repair” movement in other regions. As part of this updated hardware, the batteries in the new Joy-Con 2 controllers will also be easier to swap out. It’s currently unclear if other accessories, like the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, will receive the same upgrade.
The new Switch 2 is designed to be easier to repair, partly to meet new rules in Europe about the right to repair products. Because of this, and the fact that the original Switch came out in 2017, many expect Nintendo to stop making the original model and focus entirely on selling the Switch 2.
Nintendo hasn’t announced a release date for the Switch 2 yet. But, new rules in Europe are pushing the company to likely launch it in the near future.
