In the credits for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, there’s recognition given to Nintendo Pictogram, a branch under the umbrella of the Japanese gaming corporation.
The business, known for its work in animation and visual content creation, has received recognition for its role in motion capture technology in Kojima Productions’ highly praised sequel.
You can see the Nintendo Pictures segment in the credits via this image from VGC:
It appears that Nintendo may have had a role in the creation of this game, however, I’m curious about what Nintendo Pictures is and why it’s connected to a game published by Sony.
Indeed, the company’s past is quite captivating. Originally, it operated independently and went by the name Dynamo Pictures. Notably, it was Japan’s pioneer in motion capture technology, although its primary focus lay in creating and producing computer-generated (CG) animations.
In its own right, the company undertook numerous projects for diverse clients, one of whom was Nintendo. This esteemed client eventually bought the business in 2022.
Prior to my current role, I had the privilege of collaborating with KojiPro on the original Death Stranding project, contributing to motion capture work.
Before Nintendo took over and gave it a new identity, there’s a strong likelihood that the studio had finished some projects or was bound by an existing agreement.
It’s not particularly thrilling, but it’s amusing to witness the appearance of Nintendo in a major PlayStation Studios launch.
