Although it didn’t quite match the original Switch’s impressive first-year holiday sales, the Nintendo Switch 2 was the clear leader in the US market in 2025. According to data from Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, it was the best-selling console of the year in terms of both units sold and total revenue. It also held the top spot for sales in December.
More significantly, the console reversed a long-standing trend of decreasing sales. Spending in December increased by six percent to $1.2 billion, and annual spending rose nine percent to $5.4 billion. After launching last June, it sold 4.4 million units, nearly doubling the sales of the original Switch within the same timeframe.
On top of all its awards, Piscatella shared that the Switch 2 is the fastest-selling game console ever in the region, even outpacing the PS4’s initial sales by 35% within just seven months. While the PS5 still performed well, securing the second spot in both unit and revenue sales, the Switch 2 clearly dominated the market.
It’s still uncertain whether Nintendo can maintain this success, particularly as experts forecast potential price increases later this year because of tariffs and a limited supply of memory chips.
Okay, so here’s the deal with gaming hardware sales last month. We all spent about $1.2 billion on stuff, which is 6% more than last year. But, interestingly, we actually bought fewer consoles and accessories – about 8% less than in December 2024. The reason spending went up? Prices are higher – the average price of everything increased by 18%. Overall for the whole year, we dropped $5.4 billion on hardware, which is a solid 9% increase from the year before.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling game console in December and throughout 2025, both in terms of units sold and revenue. This helped to balance out sales decreases from other consoles. The PlayStation 5 came in second place for both sales categories and time periods.

After seven months on sale, the Nintendo Switch 2 has reached 4.4 million units sold in the US. This is almost twice as many as the original Nintendo Switch sold in the same amount of time.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is selling faster than any other video game console in history. After just seven months, it has sold 35% more units than the PlayStation 4 did during its first seven months.
