According to Nintendo’s latest financial disclosure, they have shared the actual numbers of their hardware and software sales. Nintendo has acknowledged that the newly released Nintendo Switch 2 has been purchased by 5.82 million customers so far, whereas the initial Nintendo Switch has reached a staggering 153.10 million sales. In terms of software, the Nintendo Switch 2 has achieved sales of 8.67 million units, and an impressive 1.4 billion units for the original Nintendo Switch have been sold.
To make a fair comparison, the company has given sales figures for both hardware and software from its earlier home and portable consoles. For instance, the Wii U managed to sell approximately 13.56 million units in total, while software sales reached 103.60 million units. On the other hand, their previous handheld device, the Nintendo 3DS, sold a much higher number of 75.94 million units and had software sales amounting to 392.28 million units.
Among all home consoles produced by Nintendo, none has been more successful than the Wii, which managed to sell an impressive 101.63 million units and a staggering 921.85 million software units throughout its lifetime. On the portable front, the Switch is nearly catching up with the Nintendo DS, which has sold approximately 154.02 million units. However, when it comes to software sales, the Switch surpasses the DS significantly, with the latter selling 948.76 million units.
Considering all factors, the sales numbers of Nintendo Switch 2 are even more noteworthy given its recent debut. Priced at $449.99, this console made a splash upon release with popular titles like “Mario Kart World,” which itself set new heights in game pricing with its $80 price tag. Interestingly, you can get the Nintendo Switch 2 bundled with “Mario Kart World” for $499.99.
In July, sales figures for the Switch 2 in the U.S. were disclosed, showing that the console was already smashing sales records in the country. The console managed to sell a staggering 1.6 million units in just one month within the country, outperforming the previous best, achieved by the PS4 when it debuted with 1.1 million units in its initial month back in 2013. This impressive performance was further validated by Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, who announced that a total of 3.5 million Switch 2 consoles had been sold within the first four days of its release.
Due to these statistics, the Switch 2 is presently leading the pack as the most popular video game hardware in the nation, taking the cake both in terms of quantity sold and income earned from those sales. However, it’s important to note that even though the Switch 2 had a strong debut, the US market continues to favor the PS5 when looking at year-over-year sales figures for units sold and revenue generated.
The global release of Nintendo Switch 2 on June 4 marks its arrival as a successor to the original Nintendo Switch from 2017. This new gaming system showcases several enhancements over its predecessor, both in hardware and software capabilities. It now supports advanced technologies such as variable refresh rate and DLSS by Nvidia. For comprehensive details about the Switch 2, here’s all you need to know.
