Nintendo Switch Online is getting even better for its members! Along with updated profile pictures, the service regularly adds classic Nintendo games to play. While some games require the more expensive Expansion Pack subscription, many older titles from NES, Game Boy, and Super NES are available to everyone with a Nintendo Switch Online membership. That’s why it’s great news that two more classic Game Boy games are now available to play, starting February 4th.
I’m so excited! Nintendo just added two more classic Game Boy games to Nintendo Switch Online! We can now play Balloon Kid from 1990 and Yoshi from 1991. Both games are really fun platformers from back in the day, and totally worth checking out if you’re into retro gaming. Plus, with the new Yoshi game coming out later this year, it feels like the perfect time to revisit the original!
Balloon Kid and Yoshi Arrive in the Nintendo Switch Online Classics Library

Originally released in 1990, Balloon Kid later got a makeover with a Hello Kitty theme. This side-scrolling game lets you float around levels using balloons, while avoiding enemies and challenging bosses. It even has a 2-player mode where you can compete with a friend to collect the most balloons. It’s a fun, retro game for Game Boy fans, though many Nintendo enthusiasts are likely more excited about another new release this month.
First released in 1991, Yoshi is a puzzle game featuring the popular green dinosaur who originally appeared in the Super Mario games. While Yoshi had been featured before, this Game Boy title was the first game where he was the main character. It’s a unique puzzle game, quite different from the action-packed Super Mario games, but an important piece of Yoshi’s story.
Releasing the original Yoshi game on Nintendo Switch Online is a smart move, especially with a new Yoshi game, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, planned for the Switch 2 later this year. While Yoshi and the Mysterious Book doesn’t have a firm release date yet—it’s expected in Spring 2026—bringing the first Yoshi game back into players’ minds is a good way to start building excitement for what’s likely to be one of the biggest Switch 2 games of the year.

Nintendo Switch Online members can now enjoy two new classic Game Boy games. Just download the Game Boy Nintendo Classics app on your Switch or Switch 2 to start playing. These games join a growing library of around 40 titles, and Nintendo adds more games about once a month.
These new game additions are arriving shortly before more games become available for the Virtual Boy accessory, which is launching later this month. Unlike those Virtual Boy games, these new Game Boy titles can be played with just a Nintendo Switch and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership – no extra hardware is needed.
