Most game subscription services add new games on a regular schedule, but Nintendo Switch Online does things differently. Nintendo likes to surprise players by occasionally adding classic games to its library. This month, fans of Mario will be especially happy with the new GameCube game that’s been added for Nintendo Switch Online members.
Nintendo has added Wario World, originally released in 2003, to its GameCube library for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers. This was Wario’s first adventure in 3D. It’s currently only playable on the Switch 2, but if you have one, it’s worth checking out now that it’s available through the subscription service.
Wario World, A Short But Sweet GameCube Gem, Is Now on Switch 2
Nintendo unexpectedly released Wario World on December 11th as a new addition to its collection of GameCube games for the Switch 2. While Nintendo had previously mentioned some GameCube titles coming to the Switch 2, this release was a surprise. It’s a must-play, particularly for fans of Wario! You can watch the announcement trailer for Wario World on Switch 2 below.
Wario World is a 3D platforming game originally released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2003. Players take on the role of Wario as he tries to recover his stolen treasure and get his castle back. While the game was generally well-received, some critics and players felt it was shorter than other Super Mario platformers.
Similar to classic Super Mario games, Wario World takes you through levels in a pretty straightforward way. It’s full of over-the-top battles that really highlight Wario’s special moves, and fans of older Wario titles will appreciate some familiar elements. While the game is fairly short, making a costly purchase of the original GameCube version difficult to justify, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers can now play it as part of their subscription.
This new game joins a growing collection of GameCube favorites, which already includes titles like Soul Calibur 2, Luigi’s Mansion, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Nintendo plans to add even more classic games soon, such as Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, and the recent release of Wario World suggests they have a few unexpected titles in store for us as well.

I’m so excited! Wario World is now available on the Switch 2 through the GameCube Classics library! You do need a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership to play it, which costs $49.99 a year. It’s a bit more expensive than the regular Nintendo Switch Online membership, which is $19.99 a year, but totally worth it if you’re a GameCube fan like me!
Do you remember playing Wario World on GameCube? If so, are you looking forward to playing it again on the Switch 2? Share your thoughts and join the discussion in the ComicBook Forum!
