Okay, so this new Nintendo update is kinda blowing my mind. It looks like they might be bringing back a Legend of Zelda game from way back in 2015 – can you believe it’s been eleven years?! That was before the Switch even existed! Back then, if you were a Nintendo fan, you were either playing on the 3DS or the Wii U. Honestly, the Wii U didn’t really take off, so most of us were rocking the 3DS, and it looks like Nintendo might be revisiting that era.
If you were still playing your 3DS in 2015 and enjoyed The Legend of Zelda games, you probably bought The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. Since its release by Nintendo and Grezzo, it’s been the only new Zelda game on that platform – until now, as things might be changing.
40th Anniversary Trademark
YouTuber Mike Odyssey noticed that Nintendo recently filed a new trademark for The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. This filing comes during the franchise’s 40th anniversary year, leading many to believe a Switch or potential Switch 2 version of the 3DS game could be announced and released soon. However, bringing back Tri Force Heroes seems a bit unusual, unless Nintendo is planning a similar new game. A full remake or sequel doesn’t seem likely though, considering the original game’s reviews, sales, and lack of strong demand for a follow-up in 2026.
A Forgotten Zelda Game
If you haven’t played it, this Legend of Zelda game is the second original title released for the Nintendo 3DS, following A Link Between Worlds. While it sold between one and two million copies – not a huge number for Nintendo, but certainly not a failure – it received mixed reactions from critics. Its Metacritic score of 73 reflects this, which is a little lower than most Nintendo games, though its smaller Zelda spin-offs usually score between 70 and 80.
Just to be clear, all of this is just our educated guessing. This trademark renewal might not mean anything, but the timing, coinciding with the game’s anniversary, is interesting. Would you like to see a Nintendo Switch 2 version of this 3DS Zelda game, or are there other Zelda spin-offs you’d rather Nintendo revisit?
