Unlike Microsoft, which has stopped buying game studios, and Sony, which rarely makes acquisitions, Nintendo is sticking to its strategy of collaborating with, and potentially acquiring, outside developers.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa highlighted three main areas for improving the company’s core business, starting with game creation. This involves expanding development resources and building an additional facility at their headquarters. Nintendo is also actively looking to buy other game development companies and bring them under the Nintendo umbrella.
This announcement is noteworthy considering the company’s plans to concentrate development on the next Nintendo Switch and grow its business around it. This is because Nintendo has been depending on outside developers, such as Grezzo and Good-Feel, to create games for the current Switch. For example, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has sold four million copies, and Princess Peach: Showtime! exceeded 1.22 million sales within just ten days.
We can expect this trend to continue with the upcoming Switch 2, and Nintendo might even buy some of these studios. Beyond that, after the big success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo is planning to explore more opportunities related to its games – especially in film and other media. This means we’ll likely see more movies and shows based on franchises like Super Mario Galaxy and The Legend of Zelda.
Nintendo also plans to strengthen its connection with players, but in a practical way. They’ll be investing more in the Nintendo Account system to improve how they interact with customers. Given that most Switch owners (84 percent of the 10.36 million who upgraded) are already familiar with Nintendo’s ecosystem, this approach seems logical.
