Nintendo’s New Playtime Tracker Has the Granular Gameplay Activity Data We Want from PS5

Nintendo launched a new app for the Switch today, bringing the total number of apps available to just three. That seems like a lot, doesn’t it?

This app is more like the PlayStation store, letting you look through and buy games directly. It would have been incredibly helpful on the first Switch, because the eShop was really difficult to navigate after a while.

We also noticed a really useful feature: you can review exactly how you’ve spent your time playing the game, with lots of detailed information.

The Nintendo Switch has long shown you roughly how much time you’ve spent playing games. Now, with this new app, you can see exactly how many days you’ve played each game and get detailed information about every play session.

It doesn’t show precise timings, but it provides a really good summary of everything you’ve done with a specific game. This information has been saved by Nintendo for years – all the way back to the 3DS – but they haven’t made it easily available until now.

Sony also clearly has access to this data, as evidenced by the detailed yearly summaries they share, similar to Spotify Wrapped.

Now that Nintendo is sharing more of its data, it makes us question why Sony isn’t following suit.

Wouldn’t it be great to track how often you start a game and see how long your longest playthrough has been?

We understand this isn’t something everyone will care about, and it probably mostly interests tech enthusiasts – but if the data exists, why keep it hidden? Nintendo is now making some of this information public, so we hope Sony will do the same with PS5 player data.
