Team Ninja, the creators of popular action games, are returning to the Nioh series with a new installment, Nioh 3, following their work on Wo Long and Rise of the Ronin.
Nioh is considered by many fans to have some of the best combat in gaming, and the upcoming third installment promises exciting new features that could make it even better.
Excited about Nioh 3? Here’s everything you need to know about when it comes out, how to pre-order, what the gameplay is like, the story, and other important details.
When is the Nioh 3 release date?
Nioh 3 releases on 6th February 2026 for PC and PlayStation 5.
If you have an Xbox, you won’t be able to play the Nioh games. Currently, the series isn’t available on Xbox consoles, and it doesn’t seem like Nioh 3 will change that.
The same applies to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, so it’s a good thing if you already have a PlayStation 5 or a capable computer!

Nioh 3 gameplay and story details
Similar to the first two Nioh games, Nioh 3 has you journeying across Japan, defeating demons, and improving your character’s abilities.
In addition to the diverse weapons and abilities that made the original Nioh games great, players can now easily switch between playing as a samurai or a ninja.
As a Nioh player, I’ve noticed the samurai style feels really familiar – it’s a lot like how the previous games played. But the ninja style is totally different! It’s much quicker and focuses on dodging and evading attacks, which is a fun change of pace.
As a Nioh fan, I’m seriously excited about Nioh 3! It’s going to be a huge change because they’re adding a real open world to the game for the first time. Forget those winding, level-based paths from the previous games – now we’ll be able to freely explore, find hidden areas, take on side quests, and stumble into tough battles whenever we want. It’s going to be a much more immersive experience!
The game’s story centers around Tokugawa Takechiyo, who is destined to become Shōgun. When his brother, Kunimatsu, launches an attack on Edo Castle with an army of supernatural creatures (yōkai) aiming to usurp Takechiyo, the guardian spirit Kusanagi sends the player back in time to change the course of events.
Players will journey through different eras of Japanese history – including the Heian, Sengoku, and Bakumatsu periods – battling mythical creatures called yōkai. Along the way, they’ll encounter famous historical figures and fight to protect Edo, the city, in their own time.
