The Japanese version of Dying Light: The Beast has been modified to remove nudity and graphic dismemberment in order to receive a ‘Z’ rating – the highest age rating possible in Japan. These changes were made to meet the country’s content regulations.
In Japan, the game is not available to anyone under 18. Players who are eligible will receive a version with all nudity, zombie dismemberment (including faces and torsos), and visible organs removed from both the zombies and the game environment.
According to a translation from Game Spark (via VGC), these adjustments will let the PS5 game launch in Japan and still enable Japanese players to play together with friends who have the international version.
Japanese game releases have often been censored due to depictions of dismemberment, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows faced the same issue earlier this year. The game launched in Japan without the ability to sever enemy limbs to meet the standards of the country’s review board.
According to the official Japanese website, the Japanese release of Dying Light: The Beast received a CERO Z rating after some modifications were made to the international version. These changes toned down the violent content, but still allow Japanese players to play the game cooperatively with players using other versions.
I’m still putting the PS5 version of the uncensored Dying Light: The Beast through its paces for a full review, but I wanted to share my first thoughts after getting some hands-on time with it!
Many players will likely see this as more of the same, and it is somewhat true. However, Techland has wisely made numerous small improvements that add up to a better experience. While it doesn’t offer the same scope as the second game or the originality of the first, if you enjoy fast-paced zombie combat and parkour, this could be the best Dying Light yet.
