A major reason for the success of The Pitt is its realistic portrayal of medicine, which has been lauded by healthcare professionals. Noah Wyle has emphasized the show’s commitment to telling these stories accurately, and he recently shared details about the intense medical training the cast underwent to prepare. He also jokingly discussed how well the ER cast would have fared during the training.
Noah Wyle Explained The Boot Camp The Pitt’s Cast Went Through
I was so excited for Season 2 of The Pitt to finally arrive! It’s available to stream on HBO Max, and I learned something really interesting from Noah Wyle about how they got ready to play medical professionals. Apparently, the whole cast went through a training ‘boot camp,’ as Dr. Jon LaPook called it, before filming even started. They learned the basics – things like proper instrument handling and how to correctly put on gloves – and it really helped them look the part on screen. Noah Wyle shared all about it in an interview with CBS Sunday Mornings, and it was fascinating to hear how dedicated they were to getting it right.
Since we’re a relatively new group, and none of us have medical backgrounds, we had to quickly learn a lot to convincingly play doctors. That’s why we began rehearsals several weeks before filming started. We practiced everything – from putting on gloves and using the equipment, to speaking medical terms and adopting a doctor’s mannerisms. We also spent time observing doctors and visiting hospitals to get a feel for the role.
I’m no medical expert, but watching The Pitt feels incredibly realistic, like actually being in an emergency room. It’s clear the show’s creators did their homework! It’s a fan favorite, and people appreciate how it tackles important issues and portrays hospital staff. Both medical professionals and regular viewers love it, and that’s because the cast and crew were dedicated to accuracy.
But when it comes to similar training for his other medical show, Noah Wyle isn’t convinced they would have handled it as successfully.

HBO Max subscriptions begin at $10.99 monthly. If you’re a fan of Noah Wyle’s medical dramas – including both The Pitt and ER – as well as other popular and highly-rated shows, HBO Max is a great choice. See the current deal here.
Noah Wyle Is Convinced That The ER Cast Would Not Have Done Well In The Pitt’s Boot Camp
Immediately after complimenting the cast of The Pitt for their dedication to training, the actor who played Dr. Robby jokingly contrasted them with his old colleagues from ER. He suggested the ER cast likely wouldn’t have been as successful in the training because they were a playful bunch. He then continued with:
If you took the cast of ER and asked them to go through three weeks of intense training, they’d probably goof off the whole time – not pay attention, mess around with equipment, and generally act silly. You wouldn’t get serious dedication from that group.
Given George Clooney’s reputation for pranks and his admission that he faked his way through the medical jargon on ER, it makes sense why Wyle would say that. Still, I’d prefer to believe the actors on a show that lasted 15 seasons were generally truthful about their work.
Ultimately, the actor who played Dr. Carter believed the cast of The Pitt would handle the medical training much better, and he even felt like he needed to work harder to keep pace with them, stating:
These weren’t just playful students; they were exceptionally bright and quick learners. They grasped the material so rapidly that it actually pushed me, an experienced instructor, to up my game. I realized I needed to learn alongside them because they were remarkably talented.
It’s amazing how dedicated the cast of The Pitt was – it even pushed Noah Wyle to improve his performance during their medical training! As Season 2 unfolds, I’ll definitely be thinking about all the hard work that went into making this popular show.
New episodes of Season 2 are available every Thursday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time on HBO Max. And if you’re feeling nostalgic and want to revisit the classic show ER, all 15 seasons are also available to stream there.
