Nobody Remembers This 2009 Superhero Movie With a Great Cast (& It’s Actually Good)

With so many superhero movies available, it’s worth checking out a hidden gem currently streaming on Tubi. The genre is incredibly diverse, ranging from the fun, over-the-top films of the ’70s and ’80s to the massive Marvel Cinematic Universe, the darker style of Zack Snyder’s movies, and even comedies that poke fun at the superhero concept.

Although Prime Video’s The Boys is currently the most well-known and praised superhero satire, many films have also used the genre to make pointed critiques. One example is the 2009 dark comedy Defendor, starring Woody Harrelson and directed by Peter Stebbings. It’s a surprisingly touching and somewhat sad look at Harrelson’s character, a troubled vigilante who tries to fight corruption – a twisted take on the typical superhero story.

2009’s Defendor Deserves To Be Remembered As A Great Superhero Satire

I have to say, Woody Harrelson is Defendor. He really carries the whole movie, playing this guy who thinks he’s a Batman-esque hero, but quickly feels more like Rorschach from Watchmen – a deeply flawed, yet compelling vigilante. But it’s not just Harrelson; the supporting cast is fantastic. Sandra Oh, Kat Dennings, and Tatiana Maslany all bring so much to their roles, and they really elevate the story. What starts as a funny idea quickly becomes something special, a really interesting take on the superhero genre that goes beyond just the initial joke.

At its heart, Defendor is a simple satire that plays with the audience’s ability to trust the main character, Arthur Poppington. He’s on a mission to defeat ‘Captain Industry,’ believing this person killed his mother. However, the movie keeps you guessing about who Captain Industry really is, even with hints of corruption among the police and business world. The truth doesn’t emerge until the final act, and when it does, it reveals a tragic side to the film’s complex and twisty story.

Though the entire cast of Defendor is excellent, Kat Dennings truly shines as Angel, a character who is a drug addict and sex worker. This is one of Dennings’ best roles, and she prepared for it by consulting with Wendy Babcock, a real-life advocate for sex workers. Dennings brings a surprising amount of humanity to Angel, preventing her from becoming a stereotypical character, which deepens the impact of Defendor‘s story and makes the ending surprisingly emotional.

Defendor Was Overshadowed By Another Superhero Satire

It’s a shame that Defendor hasn’t gotten as much attention, especially since a similar movie came out around the same time. Before James Gunn became a major player at DC and Marvel, he directed the 2010 cult hit Super. Like Defendor, Super features a well-intentioned but delusional man who pretends to be a superhero and becomes a surprisingly effective crime fighter. The main characters in both films share a lot of similarities, but there’s one key difference between them.

While Super definitely has some dark and disturbing scenes, it always keeps a playful, ironic tone – even the most violent or depressing moments have a twisted sense of humor, likely influenced by director James Gunn’s early work. Defendor, however, is often surprisingly and sincerely sad, which makes it a tougher movie to enjoy, even though it boasts a talented cast and a compelling story.
