Mark Hamill, aged 73, resisted the temptation to join the ranks of the villains. A versatile actor recognized for his roles in science fiction and animated superhero movies, particularly his iconic portrayal of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, Hamill was given an opportunity to venture into a more sinister realm when offered a part in a controversial R-rated horror movie focused on the human form. However, Hamill’s disgust at the film’s concept led him to decline the offer.
In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, actor Mark Hamill shared an intriguing tidbit: he was once approached to star in the controversial 2011 film “The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence.” Though this Dutch horror production by Tom Six caused quite a stir when it debuted in 2009, Hamill admitted he wasn’t familiar with the movie when offered a role in its sequel. Upon learning more about the film’s shocking premise, Hamill expressed such revulsion that he swiftly turned down the part.
Once someone told the actor they were offered a role in ‘The Human Centipede Part 2’. Intrigued, he asked, ‘What is The Human Centipede?’ Upon learning about it, he exclaimed, ‘Oh my goodness! I’m grateful for having that mental image now, but I’ll never forgive you for that!’
Later, he stated, ‘I declined the script without even reading it.’ Just hearing about the plot – connecting people’s mouths to their anuses – was enough for him to reject any involvement and express his disdain towards such a concept.
The Human Centipede movies are notable not for being well-made but rather for their intense and disturbing depictions of bodily horror. With a 27% critics’ score and 23% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s clear that the quality isn’t top-notch. However, the series focuses on a mad scientist who constructs a “human centipede” by joining several people together surgically, with their mouths sewn to the backsides of the person in front of them. In the sequel, the movie where Hamill was considered for a role, a mentally unstable individual endeavors to replicate this bizarre experiment.
Mark Hamill Walked Away From the Human Centipede 2, but He Still Has a Legacy in Horror
As a true cinephile, I must confess that “The Human Centipede 2” doesn’t align with the esteemed trajectory of Mark Hamill’s acting career, but he has certainly left an indelible mark in the horror genre. Over the years, Hamill has ventured into chilling territory, notably lending his voice to Chucky in the 2019 remake of “Child’s Play,” starring in titles like “Village of the Damned” and “Watchers Reborn,” and more recently gracing our screens in Netflix’s “The Fall of the House of Usher.” He is set to continue this horror journey when “The Long Walk” hits theaters next month.
Francis Lawrence’s movie is a thrilling dystopian tale that focuses on a band of young men participating in an intense yearly walking competition where they must keep moving or face execution. In this film, Hamill portrays The Major, a harsh military leader managing the contest. Alongside Hamill, the cast includes Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Jordan Gonzalez, and Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer. Beginning its theater run on September 12, the movie is titled The Long Walk.
