The hot topic this week is DLSS 5, a recently revealed AI upscaling technology from Nvidia.
This company is a leader in AI upscaling technology, and their next version is a significant leap forward. However, initial previews have received a mixed response from the public.
Nvidia says its new technology creates incredibly realistic lighting, significantly improving how environments and characters look. However, a recent demonstration received a lot of criticism, mainly because character faces appeared noticeably different – and not in a good way – when the technology was turned on.
There are worries that this technology could affect an artist’s vision and lead to games looking too similar. However, Nvidia insists developers will be able to fully control how it’s used in their games.
Following the announcement of its new upscaler and the negative reaction it received, Tom’s Hardware interviewed Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang to get his perspective.
“Well, first of all, they’re completely wrong,” he said when asked about the criticism.
He explained that DLSS 5 works by combining control over all aspects of a game’s visuals – like shapes and textures – with the power of generative AI.
Huang claims this won’t affect developers’ creative freedom, and they’ll still be able to customize the AI to create art in the styles they want.
He explained that DLSS 5 isn’t simply a final polishing step, or a filter applied to each image. Instead, it fundamentally changes how images are created much earlier in the rendering process.
According to Huang, developers have complete control over the tool and can freely test it to discover how it might benefit their work.
This isn’t like typical AI that just creates content; it lets you control what is created. That’s why we refer to it as neural rendering.
DLSS 5 is expected to release later this year, and we’ll likely have a better understanding of its capabilities once it’s out. Currently, some early examples haven’t been very impressive, but the final version in the hands of game developers should deliver much better results.
