The continuous wave of job reductions within the gaming industry shows no signs of abating, as Virtuos, a video game development company, becomes the latest to implement layoffs.
Initially reported by Gauthier Andres on Bluesky, Virtuos subsequently confirmed to Eurogamer that approximately 270 employees were being let go, representing around 7% of their global workforce.
Of these layoffs, it’s estimated that about 200 positions in Asia were affected, with another 70 from various European teams, leaving fewer than 10 in France.
Headquartered in Singapore, Virtuos boasts a global workforce of around 4,000 employees distributed across studios worldwide. The company is recognized for its support roles on numerous titles, contributing to the development of games such as Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1.
More recently, Virtuos has collaborated with Bethesda Game Studios, leading the development of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, which (as of May) ranks as the second best-selling game of the year in the U.S.
In addition, Virtuos is jointly developing patches for Cyberpunk 2077 with CD Projekt RED, working on the latest 2.3 update that introduced new features like AutoDriving.
The company is also collaborating with a team at Konami to co-develop the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater remake, which is scheduled for release in August.
As an onlooker, I’ve learned that Andres claims Virtuos is delving deeper into the realm of generative AI, making it compulsory for their workforce to undergo training in this area. He also suggests that Virtuos signed a “royalty-free” contract for The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, implying they aren’t entitled to any royalties based on the game’s sales or milestones.
Unfortunately, this information coincides with a continuous wave of layoffs sweeping through the gaming industry. For instance, Electronic Arts let go of hundreds of employees, closed Cliffhanger Games, and shelved a Black Panther game in development. Respawn Entertainment teams were also affected.
Sony Interactive Entertainment recently downsized about one-third of Bend Studio’s workforce, following the cancellation of a new live service game from them in January.
Microsoft has reportedly trimmed its gaming workforce at an unspecified scale earlier this July, resulting in the closure of The Initiative, the studio responsible for the Perfect Dark reboot, and the cancelation of several projects, including a new MMORPG from ZeniMax Online Studios.
