So, I’ve been super hyped for the physical release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which is coming out on October 13th, but I’m hearing we should all maybe take a deep breath and be a little careful. Basically, I’m getting the vibe that we should proceed with a bit of caution when it drops.
Wario64, a well-known figure on social media, noticed that the PlayStation 5 box art now includes a notice saying ‘Internet Required’. The Xbox version also states that the role-playing game will “require [a] content download”.
The game does include downloadable content that requires a voucher for activation. This content consists of a few armor pieces, two weapons, and some rideable mounts. It’s therefore uncertain whether the disclaimer mentioned refers to these items. (Naturally, you’ll need an internet connection to redeem them.)
Both Microsoft and Bethesda have a poor history with physical game releases. They’ve disappointed players by releasing incomplete versions of games, with only a small portion of the game’s data actually included on the Blu-ray disc.
A lot of gamers like to buy physical copies of games to make sure they can still play them even after Sony stops running its servers, so the idea of Game Key Discs (a term we’re creating) hasn’t been popular.
However, this game is quite large at 120GB, meaning the publisher may not have been able to fit all the game data onto the 100GB PS5 disc. If that’s the case, we suggest they could have used two Blu-ray discs – especially since this is advertised as a Deluxe Edition.
Of course, we may be getting ahead of ourselves here.
The disclaimer is a bit worrying – we advise being careful before pre-ordering this game – but it’s still possible the game data will be on the disc, and the publisher might not be acting with bad intentions. It’s not necessarily a malicious situation.
We’re reaching out to Bethesda to confirm whether this physical version can be played without an internet connection. We’ll let you know what we find out as soon as possible. Stay tuned for updates!
