Update [Tue Oct 7, 2025, 10am]: It’s been almost a week since people learned that the physical copy of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered needs an internet connection to play.
And we still don’t know exactly whether the full game will be playable offline or not.
Here’s what the publisher is saying on social media:
The Physical Deluxe Edition comes with the game on disc for either Xbox or PlayStation, plus a code to unlock extra digital story and deluxe content.
This means the complete game is included on the disc, but the extra content from the Digital Deluxe Edition isn’t. That’s perfectly acceptable.
What exactly counts as “digital story content”? Does it include expansions like Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine, or are those now considered part of the main game?
There’s still a lot for Bethesda to clarify here.
If you’re excited about the upcoming physical release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on October 13th, we suggest being careful and perhaps managing your expectations.
Wario64 noticed that the PlayStation 5 box now says an internet connection is needed to play. The Xbox version also indicates that you’ll have to download additional content before you can start the game.
The game includes some bonus downloadable content that you need to unlock with a code, like armor, weapons, and rideable creatures. It’s not quite clear if a recent warning relates to this, as you’ll need an internet connection to get these items anyway.
Both Microsoft and Bethesda have recently released physical copies of games that disappoint players. These releases often contain only a small portion of the game’s data on the disc, requiring frequent downloads and feeling incomplete.
A lot of gamers like to buy physical copies of games to make sure they can still play them even after Sony stops supporting them with online services. That’s why the idea of ‘Game Key Discs’ – which rely on online activation – hasn’t been popular.
The game is quite large, at 120GB, so the publisher may not have been able to fit everything onto the 100GB PS5 disc. If that’s the case, it would make more sense to use two Blu-ray discs, especially since this is advertised as a Deluxe Edition.
Of course, we may be getting ahead of ourselves here.
The disclaimer is a bit worrying, and we suggest being careful if you pre-order this game. However, it’s also possible the game is still included on the disc, and the publisher isn’t intentionally trying to mislead anyone.
We’re checking with Bethesda to see if the physical version of the game can be played without an internet connection. We’ll let you know what we find out as soon as possible.
