One innocent comment from Offset‘s 15-year-old son Jordan set off his entire sobriety journey.
One member of the hip-hop group Migos revealed he’s been sober from codeine for four years. He said a conversation with a teenager – whose mother is his ex-partner, Justine Watson – served as a turning point that led him to quit.
Offset, whose real name is Kiari Cephus, says that when he was heavily addicted to lean—a soda mixed with codeine—he began to notice Jordan copying his actions.
My son kept asking for pineapple Fanta, which was strange because he rarely drinks soda,” Keke Palmer shared on her show on October 7th. “Then he noticed my drink was a different color than his, and that just broke my heart.
Offset, who shares 10-year-old Kody with his ex, Oriel Jamie, and has three younger children – 7-year-old Kulture, 4-year-old Wave, and 12-month-old Blossom – with his estranged wife, Cardi B, then noticed that Jordan was observing his substance use.
I didn’t know what to tell him, so I just made something up,” the 33-year-old explained to Keke Palmer. “I said mine was really old and I was going to get rid of it, then I quickly grabbed it and left.
Offset explained that the seemingly harmless comment really upset him, adding, “I almost cried when I went back to my room.”
The rapper explained he felt guilty as a father. He was worried his son didn’t realize he was using drugs, and even something as simple as his son wanting the same soda made him anxious, fearing he was a bad influence.
Offset explained that he began using codeine when his career started to feel less like a passion and more like work, particularly after the hit song “Bad and Boujee” in 2016.
He explained that it starts casually, with experimentation and just trying it out. It might feel good at first, but it can quickly turn into an addiction.
Although Jordan’s words were the final push, Offset revealed that many of his family members had also been worried about his drug use at the time.
He explained that his mother disapproved of his lifestyle. Despite achieving success and financial stability, it deeply hurt when she would call and ask him to stop what he was doing.
Looking back, Offset is glad to have “solid people” who were concerned about his well-being.
As a lifestyle expert, I always say it’s crucial to have people in your life who will keep you grounded. It’s easy to get carried away when you’re successful and have financial freedom – you start to feel like nothing can touch you! That’s why I intentionally surround myself with folks who aren’t afraid to tell me the truth, even when it’s not what I *want* to hear. It’s a healthy reminder to stay humble and keep things in perspective.

I’ve been learning to set personal boundaries, something I never did before, and it’s really helped me. I also understand that ‘AJ’ is a public image, but it’s separate from who I truly am – I’m Alexander James.
I was so inspired when, back in October 2018, the actor best known for *American Pie* shared that he’d reached a year of sobriety! He announced it on Instagram with a really positive and uplifting message, and it was just great to see.
He first attempted to stop drinking and using drugs more than five years ago, realizing his addiction had become overwhelming. He quickly discovered it wasn’t easy.
He shared that he’s been sober for a year, something he’s incredibly proud of after a difficult journey. He encouraged anyone struggling with addiction to seek help, emphasizing that there’s no shame in asking and that recovery is possible.
Looking back, I’ve always been struck by how much he kept his battle with addiction hidden. It’s heartbreaking to think about all the effort he put into concealing his struggle, and it really highlights the shame addiction can create. He often spoke about it later, and I always felt a deep empathy for everything he went through.
He recently shared on his wife Jenny Mollen’s podcast, *All the Fails*, that despite being in therapy and ‘working on things,’ he would sometimes leave a session and immediately go buy a bottle of vodka. He’d drink it and then drive home, explaining that he knew how to drink enough to disconnect from his life and avoid facing his feelings.
He explained that he’d carefully planned how much he’d drink, wanting to stay coherent enough to talk. He mentioned he was constantly refilling the bottles at the bar to manage his alcohol intake.
The two-time World Cup-winning soccer player has publicly discussed using Adderall improperly while recovering from injuries during her time playing college soccer.
She shared on the 2025 podcast *Question Everything with Danielle Robay* that she had become seriously addicted to Adderall and was using it in dangerous ways. She explained she was taking it constantly, often going days without sleep. It was a chaotic time, and she felt like she was pushing her body to the limit, even fearing a heart attack. She admitted to taking the drug by crushing and snorting it, describing her behavior as deeply problematic.
However, in the midst of her struggle, her college coach Anson Dorrance was there to support her.
She described a difficult time where she had to adapt significantly. Anson encouraged her to read, and she found a life-changing book called *Man’s Search for Meaning*. It helped her understand and cope with suffering by offering a new perspective.
The Valley star shared his decades-long battle with drugs in March 2025 after going to rehab.
Jax revealed in a recent episode of Bravo’s *Hot Mic* podcast that he’s struggling with addiction, specifically with cocaine. He admitted it was difficult to talk about.
He explained that he’s struggled with this issue intermittently since he was 23, and now, at 45, it continues to come and go. Sometimes he’d stop, and other times he’d really focus on it.
Jax stopped drinking as part of getting sober. He explained that while he didn’t believe he had a serious alcohol problem, he always drank when he used cocaine, so he decided to quit both at the same time. He’s proud to have been sober for over 82 days, which is the longest stretch he’s ever had.
I was really surprised to learn that Tom Holland, you know, Spider-Man himself, stopped drinking in 2022. He actually talked about it on the Jay Shetty podcast, and it was pretty honest. He said he felt like alcohol had a hold on him, and he didn’t shy away from admitting he was addicted. He even said he thinks anyone who has a beer every day probably has something going on with it, and honestly, I kind of agree. It was brave of him to share, and it’s inspiring to see him taking care of himself.
The actor went on to explain that you eventually reach a point where you regret having that extra drink. Then, you wake up with a really bad headache the next day.
After changing his lifestyle, Holland found he was sleeping more soundly and coping with challenges more effectively.
He explained that he was much more relaxed and able to handle problems on set. He felt mentally clear, healthier, and in better physical shape.
Sean Connery, known for his role in *Hunt for Red October*, rarely discusses his nearly forty-year journey with sobriety.
He revealed in a May 2024 podcast that he doesn’t often talk about his sobriety, only bringing it up when relevant. He shared that he’s been sober for 39 years, since February 23, 1985.
Alec described a difficult period after relocating from New York to Los Angeles in 1983. He admitted to a severe cocaine addiction, saying he used an enormous amount for two years – so much that it felt like a daily struggle. He explained that cocaine use was incredibly common at the time, comparing it to how people drink coffee today.
And after quitting the drug, he soon turned to alcohol—only to also quit that dependency.
Today, he relies on the city around him.
You know, as a lifestyle expert, I always say your surroundings should *nourish* you, and New York City definitely does that for me. It’s my home, and I find it incredibly relaxing. I love just wandering around – there’s always something new to discover. Seriously, I’ll be walking past a building I’ve seen a hundred times and suddenly notice a detail I never caught before, like the design of a doorway. And of course, it’s wonderful being able to easily meet friends for lunch or coffee. It really feeds the soul!
In April 2024, Anne Hathaway, known for her role in *The Princess Diaries*, revealed she has been sober for over five years. She told *The New York Times* that reaching this point felt like a significant achievement.
She explained her decision simply. “I realized it wasn’t the right path for me,” she said. “It felt difficult to completely decline, to say ‘no’ to everything. But it made sense – if you have a serious allergy, you don’t question it. I realized I needed to stop questioning my own feelings.”
She’s glad she made the change. She explained that, for her, it’s made a real difference. “It used to drag me down, and I really don’t like feeling sorry for myself,” she said.
When accepting the 2018 Woman of the Year Award from the Peggy Albrecht Friendly House – a program helping women recover from addiction – Moore discussed how a damaging lifestyle almost ended her career.
I believe there are key moments in life that determine who we become and where we’re headed. Early in my career, I was heading down a very destructive path, and despite any success I achieved, I never felt satisfied. I had very little self-worth, and that destructive behavior quickly led to a crisis. At the time, I didn’t understand why, but it felt like something—perhaps fate—intervened.
Moore, who began seeking help in 2012, expressed gratitude to two people she hardly knew for giving her a wake-up call. She jokingly said they told her she needed to get her life back on track or face the consequences. They essentially gave her a chance to change direction before she ruined everything.
Moore reflected that others recognized potential in her that she hadn’t seen in herself. She expressed deep gratitude for their belief in her, saying she wouldn’t have achieved her current success without their support.
I’ve been so impressed with Miley Cyrus’ honesty. She revealed she started her journey with recovery from Xanax back in 2020, and it’s really resonated with me. She explained to *Rolling Stone* that getting sober actually gave her much-needed structure when she was struggling, and honestly, she said it gave her hope – and that’s incredibly powerful.
The singer explained that once they discovered a way to briefly escape their pain, they were finished with whatever was causing it. Basically, finding a way to tune it all out was the end of the struggle.
She explained that her friends at the time seemed to accept her drug use, which contributed to a downward spiral she described as a “dark, bottomless pit.” During the pandemic, Cyrus realized she was struggling and felt disconnected. She remembers frequently falling asleep and being unable to stay awake, indicating how deeply affected she was.
She eventually sought help and noted that “it took some time to get on my own two feet.”
In his 2025 documentary, *Stans*, Eminem opened up about his past struggles with prescription pills. He revealed that an overdose and missing his daughter Hailie Jade’s birthday were turning points that led him to change his life.
Honestly, hearing him talk about it just wrecked me. He said he actually *cried* because he almost missed it all again! It was like a wake-up call, him yelling at himself – ‘Don’t you *dare* miss this, not after everything!’ He was so raw, telling himself he had to do it, not just for himself, but for everyone who believed in him. It was intense, and I felt every single word. It’s like he was begging himself to not fall apart, and it was so powerful to witness.
Focusing on making music again played a key role in the Oscar winner’s recovery from addiction.
He said it did something – it switched the light on. He then realized he wasn’t ashamed of being sober anymore. In fact, he started to see his sobriety as a strength and felt proud of overcoming his addiction.
The former star of *Parenthood* had been sober for 16 years when they experienced a relapse in 2020. This happened after a motorcycle accident led to them taking Vicodin.
He explained on his *Armchair Expert* podcast that he’s been taking prescription medication consistently for about the past two months. He also mentioned he’s taking more than the prescribed dosage.
He went on to say he was miserable and felt he was deceiving everyone around him. He knew he needed to stop, but his tolerance was increasing so fast that he was now using eight pills every thirty minutes. He was terrified because he knew stopping would cause severe withdrawal symptoms, and he felt incredibly isolated, burdened by a huge secret.
I was so moved when Jamie Lee Curtis opened up about her struggles. She shared that her battle with opiate addiction actually started way back in the late ’80s, after a simple procedure to address her puffy eyes – something she inherited from her family. That one prescription led to a ten-year nightmare. She described it as a time where she was secretly stealing and manipulating others, and the saddest part is, she kept it hidden from everyone. It was incredibly brave of her to talk about it, and it really highlighted how easily addiction can take hold.
In the summer of 1998, Curtis reached a turning point when her sister came to visit and brought prescription painkillers for a broken rib. Remembering the moment, Curtis explained that she stole all of her sister’s medication. She confessed by leaving a note on her sister’s suitcase, anticipating the missing pills would be discovered. When her sister left, she embraced Curtis, expressing her love and concern, and stating she couldn’t bear to watch Curtis destroy herself.
Jamie Lee Curtis went to her first support group meeting on February 3, 1999, and that same day, she told her husband, filmmaker Christopher Guest, about her past struggles with addiction. She explained that he was surprised he hadn’t realized it before, and she has been sober ever since.
Drew Barrymore, who has previously sought treatment for substance abuse, revealed in 2021 that she had reached a significant point in her recovery. Speaking on *CBS Mornings*, she shared that she’d been sober for two and a half years, explaining that alcohol simply wasn’t beneficial to her life.
It’s a really freeing experience to finally share who you are, what you believe, and everything you’ve achieved – even though it can also feel a bit scary and open.
Drew Barrymore told the Los Angeles Times she avoids calling herself “sober” because she doesn’t want to be seen as overly strict or judgmental.
She explained that she used to tell herself, ‘I can learn this, I can solve this.’ But eventually, she came to a different conclusion: ‘I’m not going to master it, and that’s okay.’
I’ve always admired Bradley Cooper, and I was really affected learning about his past struggles. Apparently, back in the early 2000s, he battled a serious cocaine addiction. Thankfully, his friend Will Arnett really stepped up and confronted him about it, which seems to have been a turning point. It’s so inspiring to see him thriving now after overcoming that.
Cooper shared in a 2022 podcast interview that it was the first time he understood he was struggling with drugs and alcohol. He said he’ll never forget that moment.
I truly believe Arnett saved my life. He was the one who really got through to me about getting sober. He wasn’t afraid to have a tough talk, and that conversation was exactly what I needed to finally decide to turn things around and change my life for the better. I owe him everything.
Edward Norton credited Bradley Cooper with helping him overcome a years-long battle with alcohol. Accepting an award from Cooper at the 2020 National Board of Review Awards, Norton shared, “I got sober because of this guy, and I’ve been happier every day since.”
In September 2023, the former *Cruel Intentions* star revealed on Instagram that they had been without nicotine or marijuana – and other substances – for the longest time since their teenage years.
Honestly, seeing him talk about finally being free from all that… it just gets me. He said it feels amazing to break free from addiction, and that’s HUGE. He actually *said* he feels sober, clear-headed, and connected to something bigger than himself, and it’s just… so real and good to hear. It makes me so happy for him!
In 2018, the singer celebrated six years of being sober while on tour. However, she surprised fans later that year with her song “Sober,” in which she admitted to having struggled with relapse.
She sang, filled with regret, apologizing to her parents for losing control and drinking too much. She acknowledged this wasn’t the first time, and expressed gratitude to those who had stayed by her side through it all.
A month later, Lovato was hospitalized for a near-fatal overdose.
In a recent Instagram post, she shared an update on her ongoing struggle with addiction. She explained that recovery isn’t a quick fix, but a continuous process she’s still working through. She asked for privacy as she focuses on healing and maintaining her sobriety, expressing deep gratitude for the support she’s received and hope for a brighter future. She vowed to continue her fight for recovery.
In 2018, she spoke about her past struggles with sex and alcohol addiction. She explained that her addictions tended to change over time, and when she was younger, she believed sex could solve any problem. She also described realizing she had developed a serious issue with drinking.
She recalled a low point when she was home alone and nearly finished a third bottle of wine. It was then she realized she might have a drinking problem, thinking to herself, ‘Wait a minute – this isn’t right.’
I’ve always been the type of person who can just *stop* – I went cold turkey, you know? I tend to get really into things, almost obsessed, so I have to be careful. It’s not necessarily *what* you’re doing that’s the problem, it’s *how* and *why*. It’s about the reasons behind your actions. Like, wanting to have a lot of sex is fine, but you really need to ask yourself *why* you want that. That’s what truly matters.
Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean revealed he first experimented with drugs before filming the music video for their 2000 hit, “The Call.” He later told *Good Morning America* that he was extremely out of control during the shoot. He achieved sobriety in 2021 and experienced significant improvements in his health within a year, including losing 32 pounds over seven months by eliminating alcohol and fast food.
He told *Today* in September 2022 that drinking led to both weight gain and a decline in his mental well-being.
Following the tragic death of Mac Miller, rapper Bow Wow—born Shad Moss—revealed on Twitter that he once battled an addiction to cough syrup, often called “lean.” He shared a personal story, explaining that during the creation of his album *Face Off* with Omarion, he was using lean every day. He admitted to being under the influence during a heated moment on BET with Torae, and that it negatively impacted his attitude, his fans’ perception of him, and his relationship with his family. Despite never promoting drug use in his music, he was heavily addicted, consuming lean at least seven times a day during his UCP tour with Chris Brown. He experienced severe withdrawal symptoms after passing out backstage in Cincinnati, landing him in the hospital.
Bow Wow described the pain of withdrawal as unlike anything he’d ever felt, recounting how he wore multiple hoodies even in summer because of the intense chills. He missed shows in Chicago and Baltimore due to being high and sick, admitting he was using drugs simply to appear cool. He urged fans to avoid the same path, encouraging them to be good children and strive to be their best selves. He vowed to speak out more about the dangers of drug use, emphasizing the need to protect young people and save them from early deaths, and asking parents to talk to their children about the risks.
Bow Wow concluded by sharing that he still suffers from stomach problems as a result of his addiction, and reiterated his commitment to a drug-free lifestyle. He pleaded with his fans, especially young artists, to break the cycle of drug use and prioritize their health and well-being, stating, “We can’t lose any more of you.”
In 2018, the singer opened up about her struggles with addiction, coinciding with the release of her album *No Shame* and her memoir *My Thoughts Exactly*. She revealed she had been heavily using cocaine and drinking excessively. Things came to a head when, after accidentally hitting Orlando Bloom with her head at Kate Hudson’s Halloween party and knocking herself unconscious, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin organized an intervention for her.
In an interview with *The Guardian*, she described feeling deeply unfulfilled, saying, “I felt like nothing could make me happy. I even remember one morning thinking that heroin might be the only thing that could help, because everything else had failed.”
The actor known for *The Parent Trap* struggled with cocaine addiction during the 1980s, leading him to seek treatment in 1990. He later shared on *Today* that he came of age in the 1960s and 70s, a time when attitudes toward drug use were very different.
He confessed that in the 1980s, his cocaine use was so extensive it rivaled some movie budgets. He described desperately pleading with God to help him stop, often right before work, only to find himself rationalizing his behavior just hours later, thinking things weren’t so bad.
He described a powerful experience, what he called seeing a white light, where he felt like he was either dying or losing everything important in his life. He then had to explain this to his then-fiancée, Meg Ryan, and afterward, he decided to get help. He says this marked the end of his struggle with cocaine.
Following an incident at a Newport Beach hotel where he attempted to break down his own door, Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte began treatment for alcohol addiction in 2018. A representative for Lochte stated that he had been struggling with alcohol abuse for years, and it had become a damaging cycle. Lochte recognized his need for professional help and immediately sought treatment.
The statement ended by saying Ryan understands overcoming this illness is crucial, not only to prevent future regrets, but also to be a good husband and father, and to have a chance at competing in his fifth Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 and regaining his top form.
Despite knowing you shouldn’t get sober for another person, Jason Ritter credits his relationship with Melanie Lynskey as a significant factor in his decision to stop drinking.
He realized how wonderful she was and believed she deserved someone truly special. Appearing on *The Drew Barrymore Show* in March 2023, he admitted he didn’t feel up to the task, saying he was ‘a little bit too crazy’ to be with her.
However, as Ritter noted to TopMob News, he now sees that sobriety is ultimately a personal choice.
He remembered that in the beginning of their relationship, it was simpler to justify his actions by saying he was doing them for her. He admitted he didn’t value himself much then and was more concerned with protecting her feelings than his own. Initially, claiming he was acting ‘for her’ felt easier, but now he’s motivated by self-preservation.
The country singer has been sober for almost ten years, but reaching this point was a difficult journey. His struggle with alcohol and painkillers started shortly after high school and continued even as his career gained momentum. He confessed to *People* magazine that he always kept a black leather laptop bag stocked with Jagermeister or vodka, taking frequent drinks – “every hour and a half to two hours” – and pills – “every three or four hours.”
Despite everything, it didn’t hold him back. “I wasn’t falling apart,” he explained. “Actually, I was more productive then – I wrote more songs during that time than I do now, and that’s what really worried me.”
In late 2011, he was hospitalized with pancreatitis and warned that his life was in danger if he didn’t stop drinking. He admitted he initially tried to cut back on his own, setting small goals like limiting himself to a certain number of pills or amount of alcohol each day. He’d mark his progress on the bottle, and it would work for a few days, but then a social event would derail his efforts.
Eventually, Gilbert realized he needed help and checked into rehab on December 18, 2011. He explained, “I finally admitted I couldn’t overcome this on my own.” He felt frustrated and ashamed, saying, “I’m usually very determined, but this was the one thing I just couldn’t control.”
