Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, One Battle After Another, is a significant achievement in his career. The critically acclaimed political thriller is his most commercially successful movie yet and could finally earn him an Oscar after years of highly praised work. What makes its success even more notable is how much further it’s surpassed his second-highest-grossing film.
Anderson’s newest film centers on a group of modern-day revolutionaries, some of whom previously belonged to the vigilante group known as the French 75. They’re in a desperate race against time to avoid capture and save a teenager named Willa (Chase Infiniti) from the relentless pursuit of Colonel Steven Lockjaw (Sean Penn). The film also stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, and Teyana Taylor.
Anderson’s latest film quickly became his most successful, earning $48 million worldwide during its opening weekend – significantly more than the $32.9 million Licorice Pizza made in its entire run. Now, just over a month after release, One Battle After Another has already made $66.6 million in the US and Canada alone, doubling Licorice Pizza‘s overall global earnings.
Although One Battle After Another has earned a significant amount domestically, its worldwide earnings currently total $185.2 million. However, Warner Bros. was still expected to lose $100 million on the film by mid-October, despite its success. This is because the movie cost $130 million to produce and another $70 million was spent on marketing.
Most movies need to earn two and a half times their production cost just to cover expenses. That means One Battle After Another would need to make at least $300 million to be considered profitable. However, after a month in cinemas and with strong competition from upcoming films potentially nominated for the 2026 Oscars, it’s unlikely to reach that goal.
I truly believe ‘One Battle After Another’ is one of this director’s best films – everyone seems to agree! It’s a real contender for Best Picture, and the amazing reviews prove it’s a hit with critics. It probably won’t make a ton of money at the box office, but it’s clear that success can mean different things. I wonder if the people at Warner Bros. are thinking about whether all the praise makes the film’s cost worthwhile.
Warner Bros. had just finished a hugely successful summer at the box office when One Battle After Another came out, and they’d had other commercially and critically well-received films too. However, like many high-budget movies, One Battle After Another seems destined to break viewership records without necessarily making a profit.
