I’m so thrilled to see this year’s big award winner continuing its success! It’s already a huge hit on streaming – just over a month after its release, it became the most popular movie on the platform for at least a week. It’s amazing to see Leonardo DiCaprio’s film doing so well!
Since January 14th, Paul Thomas Anderson’s film has been the most popular movie on HBO Max in the United States. It’s consistently ranked higher than other films like Immaculate, Alien: Romulus, and How to Train Your Dragon.
The film is performing well on streaming platforms globally. It’s currently number one in Australia for the past week and has remained at the top in the United Kingdom for six days.
Released in theaters last September, One Battle After Another stars Leonardo DiCaprio as “Ghetto” Pat Calhoun, a former revolutionary pulled back into the fight when he and his daughter become targets of the corrupt Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw, played by Sean Penn. The film features a strong cast, including DiCaprio, Penn, Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, and rising star Chase Infiniti, and is already being considered a potential award winner this year.
The film ‘One Battle After Another’ was a big winner, receiving awards for Best Musical or Comedy, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress – with Taylor winning for her role as Perfidia Beverly Hills, a member of the resistance.
I’m really excited about One Battle After Another – it’s clearly gaining momentum! Just like with the Golden Globes, I have a feeling it’s going to impress the Academy voters too. It’s already been shortlisted for five Oscars, and experts at Gold Derby are predicting even more nominations – they think Leonardo DiCaprio could be up for Best Actor, Infiniti for Best Actress, and the film itself could be nominated for Best Picture. It’s looking really promising!
Even if One Battle After Another doesn’t win any Oscars, it’s already been a success. The film earned $206.3 million in theaters and has strong approval ratings: 85% of viewers liked it on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics gave it a 94% score. Many reviewers highlighted the excellent performances, clever humor, and relevant political themes.
Leonardo DiCaprio Admits One Battle After Another’s Success Was A Challenge
Leonardo DiCaprio admitted he felt the strain of getting people to see his original film, One Battle After Another, in theaters. Soon after the movie came out, he explained to Deadline that it was released during a particularly challenging time for original films, making it harder for them to succeed in cinemas.
DiCaprio noted that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to get people to go to movie theaters, especially considering the future of cinema. He did, however, highlight the impressive success of both Barbie and Oppenheimer during the summer of 2023.
It increasingly appears that original movies and fresh stories are losing their place in theaters. Streaming services may take over that role, while theaters become more focused on showcasing films with impressive new technology that people want to see on the big screen.
Despite his concerns, DiCaprio expressed some hope that original movies would still be made in the future. He acknowledged, however, that things are changing. “It’s going to be challenging,” he said, “and movies will need to be truly exceptional to attract audiences to theaters.”
One Battle After Another is currently streaming on HBO Max.
