The biggest announcement from Sony’s February 2026 PlayStation State of Play was likely the complete remakes of the original God of War trilogy. While details are scarce, these appear to be full rebuilds of Kratos’ story, covering his journey from becoming the God of War to his ultimate victory over Zeus. Unfortunately, Sony didn’t show any actual gameplay, which has left fans wondering what the remakes will be like.
Following the 2018 release of God of War, the series shifted away from the fast-paced, combat-focused style of the original three Greek God of War games. The new games emphasize more thoughtful, strategic action with deeper gameplay mechanics and some RPG elements for customizing gear and skills. While a remake of the God of War Trilogy probably won’t return to the side-scrolling style of the Sons of Sparta spin-off, exactly how the gameplay will evolve remains to be seen.
The God Of War: Remake Trilogy Should Avoid Changing Its Combat To Match The Norse Games

I believe it wouldn’t be a good idea for the God of War Trilogy Remake to use the same combat system as God of War (2018) or God of War: Ragnarok. While those games had excellent, polished combat thanks to George Mawle and his team, that style fits the later version of Kratos, not the one from the original games. Even though the Blades of Chaos are present throughout Kratos’ story, completely rebuilding the original combat system doesn’t feel right.
Becoming a more patient father significantly changed how the character fought in the Norse games, making him more focused on protecting others than acting impulsively. This is a stark contrast to the original God of War games, where his violent and ruthless style was reflected in the fast-paced, aggressive combat. Many fans worry that a remake might lose the distinct identity of Kratos if it tries to align too closely with his newer, more restrained portrayal.
The potential involvement of T.C. Carson, who originally voiced Kratos in the early God of War games, adds to the excitement surrounding the God of War Trilogy Remake. Similar to how David Hayter returned as Snake in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Carson could reprise his iconic lines. Bringing him back suggests that Santa Monica Studio aims to maintain the feel of the original games, something that significantly different gameplay could risk losing.
Completely rebuilding the combat system in the upcoming God of War remake is a massive undertaking, meaning it will likely take longer than fans expect. While the team can utilize existing technology and tools from God of War: Ragnarök, the entire trilogy remake might not be ready for players until 2028 or beyond. Ultimately, focusing on improving and modernizing the action-packed combat could be the best approach for this remake.
Updating Dated Parts Of The Original GoW Trilogy’s Gameplay Would Keep More Fans Happy

Beyond the improved combat, many other aspects of the original God of War games could really use a modern overhaul. Things like older level layouts, boss battles, and frustrating environmental puzzles are prime candidates for updates. By keeping the core fighting system intact, developers can concentrate on fixing the parts of God of War, God of War 2, and God of War 3 that haven’t aged well and don’t feel good to play by today’s standards.
The God of War series has stayed popular for so long by consistently satisfying its dedicated fans with fresh ideas and new games. It’s much more dangerous to disappoint those loyal players, as it could harm the franchise’s future. While people cherish their memories of past God of War titles, it’s better to improve the weakest aspects of those games than to unnecessarily change parts that already work well.
While some players might welcome changes to the original God of War combat system, altering it would risk losing what made those games so special. To really succeed, the God of War Trilogy Remake needs to stay true to the core gameplay of Kratos’ early adventures and recapture the feeling of those classic titles.
What changes, if any, would you like to see in the combat for the God of War Trilogy Remake in Santa Monica Studio’s version? Share your thoughts in the comments or discuss it with other fans in the ComicBook Forum!
