This holiday season, James Cameron is returning us to the world of Pandora with the premiere of his latest sci-fi thriller, Avatar: Fire & Ash. The antagonist in this film promises to be a truly terrifying and formidable adversary. As part of the epic Avatar series, Fire & Ash follows the storyline a year after the events depicted in 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water. In this installment, our human-turned-Na’vi hero, Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington), his wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), and their Na’vi family find themselves embroiled in a fresh conflict with another Na’vi tribe, the enigmatic Ash People. Furthermore, Jake’s old adversary, Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), makes a return to seek vengeance against Jake and his loved ones, which is likely to intensify the ongoing struggle even further.
In a promising turn of events for the new antagonist in Fire & Ash, the leader of the Ash People, Varang (played by Oona Chaplin), seems poised to match Lang’s intimidating portrayal of Quaritch from the Avatar sequel. This is evident in the Fire & Ash trailer, where Varang appears to hold her own against Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) in a tense scene. In this particular scene, Varang chillsingly tells Neytiri, “Your goddess has no power here,” indicating that she might just measure up to Quaritch as the villainous force to be reckoned with, even before the film’s release.
There Is More to the Na’vi Religion Than We’ve Seen (So Far)
In the trailer for “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” Varang’s icy remark carries multiple implications, hinting at her character and potentially revealing aspects of life on Pandora. Notably, Varang’s comment about Eywa, the Na’vi deity from the initial Avatar films, not holding dominion over the Ash Clan’s land, underscores her ruthless nature and willingness to harm her adversaries, even taunting their families in the process. Whether she’s taking Kiri captive or threatening to kill her immediately, Varang demonstrates no hesitation, positioning herself as a formidable and chilling antagonist in “Fire & Ash.
Furthermore, Varang’s mention of Eywa may imply that the Na’vi follow a polytheistic religion. In the previous Avatar films, Eywa appears to be the main or only deity worshipped by the Na’vi, with Pandora’s forests serving as a connection to this deity through the Tree of Souls. Varang’s statement could suggest that the Ash Clan may have their own distinct deity, or their religion may involve multiple deities. This remark also implies a limitation on Eywa’s power within the Ash Clan’s territory, which could indicate a more complex Na’vi cosmology than what was previously shown in the first two Avatar movies.
Avatar: Fire & Ash Focuses on the Na’vi’s Tribal Conflicts
As a die-hard Avatar fan, I’m thrilled about the upcoming film, Avatar: Fire & Ash. Unlike the previous installments where humans and Na’vi were at odds, this time around, it’s the Na’vi themselves who will be at the heart of the conflict. The Ash People, a more aggressive and war-inclined tribe compared to the generally peaceful Omaticaya and Metkayina we’ve seen before, are causing trouble. It remains unclear what triggers their hostility towards fellow Na’vi, or if they’ve always been this way, but it seems that Miles Quaritch, our franchise’s ruthless villain who now inhabits a Na’vi body following The Way of Water, is somehow involved in the escalating conflict.
In the preview for “Fire & Ash,” Quaritch appears less frequently, but his presence is significant. He’s depicted entering the territory of the Ash People, displaying empty hands to signal peace. Another scene shows him arriving with two unknown individuals dressed in AMP suits. This could imply that Quaritch, still bitter about losing to Jake Sully and his Na’vi kin twice, may influence or perhaps even pressure the Ash People into declaring war against Jake’s family and the Metkayina tribe. It appears that Varang is particularly susceptible to what Quaritch offers, as suggested by a chilling line from the “Fire & Ash” trailer.
Varang Already Seems As Ruthless As Quarritch
In the brief glimpses of both Varang and Quaritch in the trailer for Fire & Ash, it appears that Varang could potentially match or even surpass Quaritch as a formidable villain in the Avatar series, given the impressive portrayal of Quaritch by Lang in the first two movies. The challenge for a new character like Varang is significant when compared to Quaritch’s memorable role as a ruthless military commander. Interestingly, the return of Quaritch in Fire & Ash means that audiences will have not one but two powerful antagonists in the third Avatar movie, and based on a single clip, Varang might even be more terrifying than Quaritch in certain aspects.
In the story of “Fire & Ash,” it’s evident that Varang appears ruthless and devoid of remorse, as she not only seems poised to kill Kiri in a brutal manner, but also uses the Na’vi’s own religious beliefs and deities to mock Neytiri. This suggests a harsh and unyielding character. The origin of this conflict might stem from long-standing feuds between Na’vi tribes or be instigated by Quaritch, or possibly a mix of both. However, regardless of the cause, Varang has already solidified her role as a formidable villainess in “Avatar: Fire & Ash” with just one chilling statement.
Avatar: Fire & Ash will be released in theaters on December 19th.
