Season 2 of Netflix’s One Piece follows the Straw Hat crew as they continue their journey toward the Grand Line. Before heading there, they make a meaningful final stop in the East Blue, where a familiar enemy returns with a striking new look. The season begins with the Straw Hats arriving in Loguetown, a town important to Luffy because it’s where the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger, was executed. However, their time in town quickly becomes dangerous with the reappearance of two villains from the first season.
Buggy, the memorable villain from season one, is back for revenge against Luffy, and he’s brought help this time. He’s joined by Alvida, the captain of the Alvida Pirates and Luffy’s first opponent in the series. But Alvida looks quite different now! This isn’t due to a change in actors or a mistake; it’s a deliberate change to stay true to the original story.
A Returning Villain in Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 Gets a Shiny New Transformation

In the anime and manga One Piece, Alvida returns after being defeated by Luffy with a new ability – the Slip-Slip Fruit gives her a completely slippery and shiny body. This changes her appearance, making her look slimmer and more glossy. Actress Ilia Isorelýs Paulino’s physical transformation for the second season of the live-action series accurately reflects this change from the original story, aiming for a faithful adaptation. The debut episode showcases this new Alvida, demonstrating how much more difficult she is to defeat – the Straw Hats ultimately overcome her by using her own slippery powers against her.
It’s easy to overlook small details like this one with Alvida, but they actually demonstrate how well the live-action One Piece adapts the original story. The show doesn’t just recreate the source material; it often improves upon it. For example, while Alvida’s transformation in the anime and manga focuses on her looks, the live-action version cleverly emphasizes how her Devil Fruit power enhances her strength and makes her a more serious threat. These kinds of thoughtful additions are throughout the second season of One Piece, and they contribute to a surprisingly high-quality series.
