A highly-rated PlayStation 2 game from 2005 is being released on PS4 and PS5 later this year. You’ll be able to buy it from the PlayStation Store, but it will also be available at no extra cost for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers. While an exact release date hasn’t been announced yet—which is unusual given how close we are to the launch—Sony will likely reveal it soon. It’s great news for PlayStation fans who enjoy revisiting classic games.
Bandai Namco announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Soulcalibur III will be available on both current and older PlayStation consoles later this year. You’ll be able to purchase it separately, in addition to it being included with a PS Plus Premium subscription. While a re-release of Soulcalibur III as a PS2 classic was already known, it wasn’t confirmed whether it would be available for individual purchase or only through PS Plus Premium.
About the Game
Released in 2005, Soulcalibur III was the last main installment in the Soulcalibur fighting game series created by Project Soul. Sadly, Project Soul hasn’t released a new game since Soulcalibur VI in 2018, and there are currently no announcements about a future Soulcalibur title. This means fans on PlayStation 4 and 5 will likely be revisiting older games like Soulcalibur III for now.
Despite being called Soulcalibur III, this game is actually the fourth main installment in the Soulcalibur series, which began in 1996. It received a score of 86 on Metacritic, making it one of the best-rated PlayStation 2 games of 2005, particularly among exclusive titles. Soulcalibur III launched as a PS2 exclusive and remained that way; it was only released for arcades in 2006 and never made its way to PC or any other console.
As a big fan, I’m keeping my fingers crossed, but honestly, I’m not expecting the upcoming PS2 classics to get any special treatment on the PS5 Pro. Looking back, none of the previous PS2 games have ever been updated to really take advantage of the newer consoles, so I don’t see that changing this time around either.
If you’re not interested in this PlayStation 2 game, don’t worry – there are lots of other choices available on PlayStation 4 and 5. And this week actually saw the return of another beloved PS2 series with a brand new game!
