When people think of popular sports movies, they usually picture football, baseball, or other team sports. But surprisingly, the highest-grossing sports movie ever isn’t about any of those. It’s actually about Formula 1 racing – the world’s most popular type of car racing!
I was so excited to see F1: The Movie hit theaters this summer, and it really delivered! Not only did critics love it, but it was a huge success, bringing in an incredible $631 million worldwide. It was fantastic to see Brad Pitt working with Joseph Kosinski – the director behind Top Gun: Maverick – and now I’m thrilled it’s finally available to stream!
You can now watch F1 at home! It’s been added to Apple TV this week and is available to stream with a subscription and no ads. If you don’t have Apple TV, you can often sign up for a free trial.
F1: The Movie Was One Of 2025’s Biggest Movies
Even though Apple created it, the film F1: The Movie had a surprisingly long run in theaters before becoming available to stream. It was released in cinemas in June and wasn’t available for home viewing for six months, which is unusual, particularly for a film from a streaming service.
Beyond its box office success, F1: The Movie also received positive reviews, achieving an 82% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many critics drew favorable comparisons to Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick, particularly regarding the movie’s exhilarating speed and action. Top Gun: Maverick was praised for its immersive fighter jet footage and stunts, and F1: The Movie delivers a similar experience, but this time placing viewers directly inside the high-stakes world of Formula 1 racing.
In the movie F1, Brad Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a veteran race car driver nearing retirement. Years ago, a promising career was cut short by an injury. Now, his former teammate, Javier Bardem, who owns an F1 team, needs a temporary driver. Sonny and the team’s rising star, Joshua Pierce (played by Damson Idris), must work together to avoid last place, but their clashing personalities create challenges. Keeping the team together is Kate McKenna (Kerry Condon), the technical director, who also develops a connection with Sonny.
The movie F1 follows a pretty standard formula for sports or racing films, but it’s the racing sequences themselves that truly make it special. The action is so exciting that you’ll easily overlook any problems with the story.
Now that Formula 1 racing is available to stream, will you be watching this weekend? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion in the ComicBook Forum!
