Many movies each year don’t get the attention they deserve, whether they’re small independent films or get lost in the rush of big-budget releases. Sometimes, even films with well-known actors are overlooked. That happened with Jennifer Lopez’s recent remake of a classic thriller – it quietly appeared in theaters last fall, but now that it’s available to stream, it’s a must-see, especially for fans of Star Wars.
I was really excited for Kiss of the Spider Woman when it hit Hulu on February 27th, and critics seemed to like it too! It’s a shame it didn’t do well in theaters, only making about $2 million despite costing $30 million to make. It had a short run in October 2025, and even though Jennifer Lopez got some awards talk, it quickly disappeared. It’s based on a stage musical and a book from 1976, and honestly, I was surprised it didn’t connect with more people. The cast was great – along with Jennifer Lopez, you’ve got Tonatiuh, Bruno Bichir, Josefina Scaglione, and even Diego Luna from Andor! It’s a bummer when a critically acclaimed movie with such a talented cast doesn’t find its audience.
Kiss of the Spider Woman Isn’t Great as a Musical But the Film Itself is Fantastic

The film Kiss of the Spider Woman takes place in Argentina and tells the story of Luis Molina, who is imprisoned for public indecency. He shares a cell with Valentin Arregui, a revolutionary. To escape his circumstances, Luis often retreats into the world of his favorite actress, Ingrid Luna, and her film, Kiss of the Spider Woman, eventually sharing the movie with Valentin. As they become captivated by the film together, a love story unfolds. However, Luis must also confront the truth about why he’s in prison and a challenging decision he faces.
Though Kiss of the Spider Woman includes several songs performed by Luis (Tonatiuh) and Valentin (Luna), the film’s strength lies in its story and performances. Critics particularly praised the main cast, especially Tonatiuh and Luna. Interestingly, for fans of Star Wars and Andor, Luna plays a revolutionary character in both works. While the characters and settings are different, their journeys share some similarities. Both Valentin and Luna’s character, Cassian, are motivated to rebel by love, though with contrasting results. Watching Kiss of the Spider Woman after seeing Andor offers a fascinating comparison. While not a major box office success initially, the film is now available on Hulu, making it a good time to discover it.
