It seems that 2025 is proving to be a stellar year for horror movies, as both fresh offerings and established franchises are thriving at the box office. Intriguingly, one horror movie series absent from our screens for over a decade has made a triumphant return this year, even surpassing many others to claim the position of the second-highest-grossing horror movie of the year so far, only trailing behind Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.
Starting next week, HBO Max has set the streaming debut for Final Destination: Bloodlines, allowing subscribers to watch it earlier than anticipated. Beginning August 1st, horror enthusiasts can stream this movie directly on HBO Max.
What Is Final Destination: Bloodlines About?
A teenager named Stefani Reyes, also known as Kaitlyn Santa Juana, often experiences disturbing dreams about a tower collapsing in the 1960s. She later learns that these dreams are prophetic visions she inherited from her grandmother, who had foreseen the building’s collapse and saved numerous lives. However, as members of Stefani’s family start dying in mysterious and gruesome accidents, she reaches out to her long-lost grandmother. In doing so, she unknowingly takes on a sinister inheritance – the challenge of dodging a predestined plan called Death’s Design. The young girl is now racing against time to figure out how to protect not only herself but her entire family line from being erased by Death before it finishes its deadly work.
SPOILER-FREE Review
In the Final Destination franchise, Death’s plan unfolds through intricate and unpredictable events akin to Rube Goldberg machines, causing seemingly harmless accidents or dangers that eventually lead to a gruesome demise. Bloodlines doesn’t change the formula but offers inventive and frequently unexpected variations on who meets their end and how. The movie skillfully utilized trailers and advertising to generate anticipation, only to completely subvert those expectations in the final product. If you’re seeking that distinctive horror adventure that only Final Destination can provide, this is it (once more).
In simpler terms, the directors and writers seem to focus too much on developing the family dynamics in this new “Final Destination” series installment, which might not be what fans are looking for. While the initial disaster scene is well-executed, it takes up too much screen time, slowing down the movie’s pace. However, this is Tony Todd’s last appearance in the franchise, and he delivers a strong monologue, along with receiving an origin story that includes a surprising twist.
