I’ve been playing Assassin’s Creed for years, and it’s wild how much the series has changed! They’ve jumped through tons of different time periods, and honestly, the modern-day story stuff has gotten pretty complicated. But what really shifted things for me was Assassin’s Creed Origins. It felt way more like a full-on RPG with all the dialogue choices and stuff. They kept building on that in the games after, and they’re not afraid to add completely new things – remember all the naval combat? It’s cool because each game feels pretty different, and it looks like something big from Assassin’s Creed Shadows might become a standard feature in future games, which is exciting!
Released earlier this year, Assassin’s Creed Shadows delivered the Japan-based game that fans had been requesting for years. Although not universally loved, the game received generally positive reviews and appears to have been commercially successful, meaning Ubisoft considers it a win.
Assassin’s Creed May Bring Back Multiple Protagonists in Future Games

A key feature of Assassin’s Creed Shadows was the ability to play as two different characters: Naoe and Yasuke. They offered contrasting playstyles – Naoe focused on classic stealth and agility, while Yasuke was a powerful, strong warrior who used brute force and large weapons. Ubisoft liked this approach and may use it in future games.
In an interview with GamesRadar, Simon Lemay-Comtois, an associate director, discussed the possibility of having two playable characters in a future Assassin’s Creed game. He explained that the dual protagonists in Assassin’s Creed Shadows received mixed reactions, unlike Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, where players controlled a pair of siblings, which was better received.
I’ve noticed some people really have strong feelings about which character to follow in the show – it’s not always about preferring action versus story! Some fans just naturally connect with one character more than the other and want to spend more time with them. The creators knew this could be an issue, especially since they saw how people reacted to Evie and Jacob in a previous series. They were aware it might divide the fanbase a bit, but they went for it anyway, knowing some of us would strongly prefer following either Naoe or Yasuke.
Even though some fans weren’t thrilled with the dual-protagonist approach in Shadows, he believes it’s still a viable idea for future games, as long as the story and world make it a good fit. He explained, “We’ve learned that we can explore dual-protagonist games again, but only if it makes sense for the narrative and the game’s setting.”
