A highly popular film by Christopher Nolan is now a hit on streaming services. Nolan is one of Hollywood’s most respected directors, and throughout his long career, he’s worked on many different kinds of stories. He first gained widespread recognition directing films based on DC Comics characters.
Released in 2008, The Dark Knight is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, currently ranking as a top streaming film on Netflix worldwide. It’s currently the #2 trending movie in the Dominican Republic and is a top 3 hit in Ecuador, Mexico, and El Salvador.
In Bolivia and Brazil, viewers on Netflix are currently watching The Dark Knight as one of their top choices – it’s #4 in both countries. The film is also popular in the Bahamas and Chile, where it’s ranked at #6.
Although you can’t watch The Dark Knight on Netflix in the U.S., it is available on HBO Max. Christopher Nolan’s Batman films were incredibly important, not just for the character, but for the entire superhero movie genre.
The film The Dark Knight revolves around Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman, and his conflict with the Joker, brilliantly played by Heath Ledger. Ledger tragically passed away shortly before the movie came out, but his performance as the Joker earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Widely considered a top superhero film, The Dark Knight earned over $1 billion worldwide when superhero movies were still gaining popularity. The same year, 2008, also marked the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the first film from Marvel Studios.
In 2012, Nolan concluded his Batman saga with The Dark Knight Rises, a film set several years after The Dark Knight. The entire Dark Knight trilogy earned over $2 billion at the global box office.
The next version of Batman will appear in two separate DC storylines. A sequel to The Batman starring Robert Pattinson is already planned for 2027. DC Studios is also developing The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce a new Batman within James Gunn’s DC Universe.
Christopher Nolan’s next film, an adaptation of The Odyssey, is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 17, 2026.
