It was hinted that a well-loved Disney Channel show, Amphibia, could potentially make a comeback following its cancellation. This beloved series aired from 2019 to 2022 and revolved around a young girl who found herself in a vibrant world populated by frogs and other amphibians. Throughout its three-season journey, the show garnered much acclaim, achieving an impressive 8.3/10 rating on IMDb. Critics lauded it for its endearing characters, richly colored setting, and sensitive handling of more complex themes such as bullying and emotional manipulation.
Although Amphibia was cancelled in 2022, creator Matt Braly hinted at potential future developments for the show during a recent Comic-Con event. The specifics of what this continuation might entail are still unclear, but Braly appears eager to revisit the animated series starring Brenda Song.
At San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), Braly shared (through Laughing Place) that he’s currently investigating potential further adventures for the critically acclaimed Disney Channel show Amphibia. Yet, it might not strictly follow as Season 4.
He suggested that it wasn’t exactly a TV show, but rather, it could be enjoyable to revisit the characters and their world during the Amphibia Farewell Panel at SDCC 2025.
It’s not exactly a continuation of the TV series, but I believe it could be quite entertaining to revisit those characters and their universe in an unconventional manner.
It’s not entirely clear what form it might take, but there are suggestions that it could potentially be a miniseries, a standalone special, or an adaption into another medium.
In the show “Amphibia,” Brenda Song, who previously appeared on “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody,” plays Anne Boonchuy. Anne is a self-reliant and adventurous preteen who finds herself mysteriously transported to an enchanting realm populated by amphibians that can talk. Despite receiving positive reviews, the series unfortunately ended in 2022 after only three seasons, with just 58 episodes produced.
How Will Amphibia Continue?
Given the high esteem fans hold for the show “Amphibia”, it’s nearly guaranteed they’ll be thrilled to learn that the creative team is contemplating a return of some kind.
Until an official announcement is made, it remains uncertain what form a comeback for the acclaimed animated series might take, as there are multiple potential avenues for its return.
Disney has shown a tendency to revive animated series fully as of late (for instance, observe the ongoing developments with the cherished “Phineas and Ferb” series), but based on Braly’s remarks about the upcoming “Amphibia” project, it appears that a complete Season 4 might not be in the works.
A more likely scenario appears to be a unique miniseries or compact series, serving as a heartfelt farewell gift to fans who have followed the show since its initial three seasons.
As a passionate fan, I can’t help but marvel at the achievements of other beloved animated series such as “The Owl House” and “Gravity Falls.” It’s fascinating to consider if the creative minds behind “Amphibia,” including Braly, might contemplate extending the storyline into comic books, just like these successful shows have done.
Indeed, during Braly’s appearance at SDCC 20225, he unveiled a proposed ten-issue graphic novel series titled “Amphibia: Strange Journey“, which could suggest an expansive comic book horizon for the popular show.
Regardless of what it is, fans are receiving more, which is precisely what many who were disheartened by the sudden end of their cherished series wanted.
