Everyone knows Dune – whether from the books or the movies. But surprisingly, one of the lead actors initially disliked the original films from the 1980s. Despite his reservations, he stayed with the project and, at the very last minute, asked for one major change to his character.
Kyle MacLachlan, the original Paul Atreides and a star of beloved films like *Twin Peaks* and *Blue Velvet*, recently discussed working with director David Lynch on the first *Dune* movies. He shared a memorable story about a moment he had with Sting, who played his character’s rival, Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen.
Ironically, Sting Never Wanted To Be In Dune

I was playing Paul Atreides, and during a scene, Sting was right in front of me with a knife, while Patrick Stewart stood between us. Arturo García Rubio, who was the second assistant director, was also nearby and ended up with a significant role. I remember Arturo and I both struggled with how heavy and restrictive Sting’s costume was – it was hard to move, and I could barely raise my arm. It felt like being squeezed by a rubber band. Sting really didn’t want his character to die, and he asked David Lynch if there was any way to avoid it, but David said it was necessary. It’s ironic, considering Sting only agreed to be in the movie because it was a David Lynch project to begin with.
Sting famously told Rolling Stone he only agreed to be in the movie *Dune* because of director David Lynch. He admitted he wasn’t initially enthusiastic, worrying that a large-scale film might hinder the momentum of his growing movie career and that he reluctantly participated. It’s surprising, then, that he later campaigned for his character to survive, even though the original novel by Frank Herbert had a different fate planned. Despite not being a box office success, David Lynch’s *Dune* has become a cult favorite, and it still has a dedicated following more than 40 years later.
