In 2026, one of the initial games confirmed for Xbox Game Pass boasts significant scale. This game, available on Xbox Game Pass from its launch day, is exclusive to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC subscribers initially. Subscribers with Xbox Game Pass Core and Standard tiers may have to wait for it to be added to their plans at a later time.
The upcoming game to be added to Xbox Game Pass in 2026 is none other than “High on Life 2”, scheduled for release on February 13, 2026. Interestingly, this sequel will not just be exclusive to Xbox but also available on PS5 and PC platforms. A departure from its predecessor, the first game was initially an exclusive for the Xbox Series X console, arriving later on the PS5 a year afterwards. The first game did expand to Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 this year, however, there is no confirmed news about “High on Life 2” being released on any of these platforms. Consistently, upon its release, “High on Life 2” will be accessible for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC subscribers, similar to the first game. Unlike its predecessor, “High on Life 2” will launch on PS5 but won’t be part of PlayStation Plus, at least not initially.
Predecessor One of the Biggest Game Pass
In 2022, “High on Life” made a grand entrance on Xbox Game Pass, marking the largest launch of the year for the platform. Additionally, it holds the record for the biggest third-party launch on Xbox Game Pass and is the largest single-player game ever released on the service. It’s uncertain if the sequel can replicate these impressive numbers, but it has already secured a spot as one of the significant Xbox Game Pass titles in 2026. Despite these impressive milestones, “High on Life” didn’t receive critical acclaim, which is an aspect the sequel will aim to enhance.
No More Justin Roiland
The upcoming game High on Life 2 seems similar to its predecessor, but it’s important to mention that Justin Roiland, who created Rick and Morty and co-founded Squanch Games, is no longer part of the studio. It’s unclear whether this departure will affect the sequel, but fans can look forward to both a 2026 sequel and an animated show in development as well.
Can the Sequel Repeat the First Game’s Success?
As a die-hard fan, I don’t anticipate Justin Roiland’s absence from the sequel to significantly impact the game. Even though he wasn’t deeply involved in its development, replicating his comedic flair, as evidenced by Rick and Morty’s continued success after his departure, isn’t overly challenging. However, it’s unlikely that High on Life 2 will replicate the same level of success due to a few factors.
Firstly, while Roiland’s absence may not affect the quality of the sequel, it will certainly influence its marketing. Secondly, High on Life had a unique, almost magical feel, and its release in December, a traditionally slow period for new releases, added to this sensation. The game was like lightning in a bottle.
Lastly, releasing in February, High on Life 2 will face greater competition. Not only will it have more contenders, but the attention on Xbox Game Pass has grown increasingly competitive since 2022. So while I’m excited for the sequel, I understand that replicating the original’s success might be a challenge under these circumstances.
Having made all those points, don’t hesitate to share your thoughts with us. Now, I wonder if next year you might decide to explore “High on Life 2” through Xbox Game Pass?
