Many famous actors appeared on Friends in small roles, but one actor uniquely played two different supporting characters throughout the show’s run. Friends remains incredibly popular decades after it first aired and, along with Seinfeld, helped create the popular sitcom style of shows centered around a group of friends hanging out – a formula seen in later hits like New Girl, The Big Bang Theory, Happy Endings, and especially How I Met Your Mother.
Beyond inspiring other TV shows, Friends launched the careers of many actors. Not only did the six main cast members become stars, but numerous future well-known actors appeared in guest roles on the show. One example is Giovanni Ribisi, who later starred in films like Saving Private Ryan and the Avatar series, as well as the popular drama Sneaky Pete. He first gained recognition playing Phoebe’s half-brother, Frank Buffay, appearing in several episodes during the later seasons of Friends.
Frank Jr.’s Actor Giovanni Ribisi Originally Played “Condom Guy” In Friends

If you’ve watched Friends multiple times, you might remember David Schwimmer isn’t the only actor to play more than one role. Before becoming Frank in season 2, David Schwimmer played a small, unnamed part – the ‘Condom Guy’ – earlier in the same season. This happened in the episode where Phoebe had to perform outside Central Perk because the owner hired a different musician.
Phoebe finds it hard to adjust to the new busking situation, especially because of the small, embarrassing things that happen to her. One particularly awkward moment involves a stranger throwing a condom into her guitar case instead of money, and then coming back later to pick it up. Surprisingly, this man, who only has one line in the show, is played by Giovanni Ribisi. It’s also interesting to note that the show hints this man might be the same person as Frank, but never confirms it.
Both of Giovanni Ribisi’s Friends Characters Could Technically Be The Same Person

Although Friends had many memorable storylines and guest appearances, Giovanni Ribisi’s character, Frank Jr., was especially important to Phoebe’s story in the later seasons. After marrying Alice, who was much older than him, Frank and Alice ask Phoebe to be a surrogate mother, hoping to have a child. Phoebe agrees, but later, when she finds out she’s pregnant with triplets, she asks if she could raise one of them.
Despite ultimately raising the triplets alone, Frank briefly offers Phoebe the chance to take one of them near the end of the show. He’s become overwhelmed as a parent, a stark contrast to the wild and unpredictable character he was when first introduced. Phoebe has changed dramatically too, evolving from a struggling musician who once accepted a condom as a tip into the confident person she is in the finale.
