Marvel fans have plenty of exciting games to look forward to this year! Highlights include the eagerly awaited Wolverine game from Insomniac, a Marvel Super Heroes set for Magic: The Gathering, and the intriguing Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. Plus, one of Marvel’s most popular games is getting a big update in 2026, and we now have all the details after a long wait.
Since it first came out in 2012, Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game has been a top-selling and beloved Marvel game, consistently adding new characters and improvements. For years, players have been anticipating a major update, and Upper Deck has now announced Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game Second Edition. The good news is it’s scheduled to release later this year.

Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game Retains What You Loved, But With a Much-Needed Modern Update

After more than 13 years, Marvel Legendary remains a popular choice for game nights because of its engaging strategy and huge selection of Marvel characters. Now, Upper Deck is releasing a major update to the game, building on everything learned from expansions released over the years. Almost every card in the base game has been updated, rebalanced, and improved.
The game now features completely new artwork for every card, and as you can see, it looks amazing! We’ve also expanded the artwork area by removing the borders around the edges, allowing the illustrations to fill the entire card. Plus, each hero’s set of four cards will now have four unique illustrations, instead of repeating the same image as before.
Looking at a comparison of the Spider-Man Web-Shooters cards, you’ll notice a clear improvement. While the older version had good artwork, the new cards each have a unique design, and the updated art style is much more distinctive than before.

The striking new artwork was created by a team of talented artists: Andrea Adiletto, Don Aguillo, Tazio Bettin, Lip Wei Chang, Lorenzo Di Santo, Nahuel Lopez, André Meister, Johnny Morrow, Lorenza Pigliamosche, Simone Ragazzoni, Riccardo Robaldo, and Ryan Smallman.
The game is getting some exciting new additions! Players will now be able to play as new characters, including the highly requested Miles Morales as Spider-Man. He’s replacing Deadpool, but you can still play as Deadpool with the “Legendary Deadpool” set. On the villain side, Doctor Octopus joins as a new Mastermind, and his Sinister Syndicate is also now available to battle.

This updated edition includes some exciting new additions and improvements! You’ll find 10 specialized S.H.I.E.L.D. Officers alongside the standard ones, plus the introduction of Daring Sidekicks and Special Bystanders – increasing the total number of Bystanders to 42, up from 30 in the original game. We’ve rebalanced many of the characters for fairer gameplay, and added a “Warmup Round” to 4 and 5-player games to reduce the risk of villains escaping too early. Players can also now agree to a “Starting HQ Mulligan” if their initial Headquarters cards are particularly expensive – costing 7 or more each.

The new edition of Marvel Legendary brings some tougher challenges for players. It introduces “Epic Masterminds” – significantly harder villains that replace the original Masterminds found in the base set. Even the regular villains have been made more difficult than before. Plus, the eight original schemes have been rebalanced for a greater challenge, and a completely new ninth scheme has been added.

We’ve made a few improvements! Card stacks have been adjusted based on the number of players, giving those in larger games more time to play. We’ve also refined the solo mode: the Villain Deck now lasts about four extra turns before needing to be reshuffled, thanks to the removal of an extra card after each Master Strike.
We don’t have a specific release date for Legendary: A Marvel Deck Building Game yet, but it’s confirmed to be coming out sometime this year. We’ll share the exact date as soon as we know it.
