It’s disappointing that Netflix ended this sci-fi series after nine years without letting it reach a natural conclusion. Netflix has given us many popular sci-fi shows like Stranger Things, Dark, 3 Body Problem, Sense8, and The Umbrella Academy. While not all have been huge hits, the streaming service has sometimes cancelled shows too early, and unfortunately, that happened to The OA, which first appeared on Netflix on December 16, 2016.
Created by the team behind several previous projects, The OA featured Brit Marling as Prairie Johnson, a woman who disappeared for seven years and returns home with her sight restored. She has mysterious scars and now goes by the name “the OA.” The series also stars Emory Cohen, Jason Isaacs, and a talented ensemble cast who all give outstanding performances. This sci-fi show is known for being moving, emotional, and thought-provoking. Sadly, Netflix cancelled The OA after just two seasons in 2019.
The OA Season 2 Perfectly Set Up Future Stories, But Will They Happen?

The Netflix series The OA uncovered that Prairie and the others who were kidnapped were experimented on by Hunter Aloysius Percy, known as Hap (Isaacs). He induced near-death experiences to study what happens to consciousness after death. They discovered that the afterlife wasn’t a separate place, but rather a transfer of consciousness into a duplicate body in another dimension. Both the OA, her companions, and Hap learned to move between these dimensions. This setup allowed season 2 of The OA to introduce a new reality where Hap was a respected psychologist and the OA’s friends were his test subjects.
Following her journey with detective Karim Washington, OA and Hap found themselves in a new dimension, where they were married actors working on a film set. The season ended with a surprising twist when Steve, from OA’s original reality, appeared in this new world, leaving viewers on a cliffhanger. Originally, the creators, Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, had envisioned the show running for at least five seasons, and its dedicated fans have passionately campaigned for its revival. However, Netflix has not yet renewed the series.
In recent interviews, Jason Isaacs hinted that The OA might not be finished after all, and that its creators, Batmanglij and Marling, could be planning a return for the show. They previously declined Netflix’s offer for a wrap-up movie – similar to what the creators of Sense8 did after its cancellation – suggesting they have bigger plans. Fans are eager to find out what happened to OA, Hap, and the other characters in the new dimension introduced at the end of the series, and hope the show is brought back, nearly a decade after it first aired.
