A major exclusive game for the Nintendo Switch 2, released in 2025, will soon stop receiving updates. Most modern video games, especially on Nintendo consoles, are continually improved after launch with patches and updates released over weeks, months, or even years. Mario Kart World is a good example – it’s already received numerous updates since its June release and will likely continue to be updated well into 2026. However, one prominent Nintendo exclusive will break this trend and no longer be supported.
So, it looks like support for the new Kirby Air Riders on Switch is wrapping up already. As a big fan of the original Kirby Air Ride on GameCube, I was so excited when this launched last month, and thankfully most people seem to be enjoying it! But the director already said there wouldn’t be any DLC, and now it seems like we shouldn’t expect any further updates either. It’s a little disappointing, but I guess they’ve delivered the game they intended!
Masahiro Sakurai, director of Kirby Air Riders, recently announced on social media that the game’s development team will be dissolving. Before that happens, they plan to release a few more updates to improve the game’s balance for future players. After these updates, however, development on Kirby Air Riders will end permanently.

Sakurai announced in Air Riders Direct 2 that the team behind Kirby Air Riders will be disbanding soon and there are no plans for downloadable content. He explained that they’re focusing on creating a well-balanced game that will remain enjoyable for years to come, and while they might make one final adjustment, players should consider the current balance as the final version.
Despite Sakurai’s attempts to manage expectations, it’s still unexpected to see Kirby Air Riders losing player interest so quickly. Many expected frequent updates to balance the gameplay, as the development team worked with players to improve the experience. However, it now appears development on Air Riders will end in just a few weeks, with no further updates planned.
It’s currently unclear what Masahiro Sakurai will do next. As the director of the popular Super Smash Bros. series for many years, fans are hoping he’ll create a new game for the upcoming Switch 2. However, Sakurai has previously indicated that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was likely the last Smash game he would direct. Only time will tell if he decides to return to the series after all.
