The Nintendo Switch 2 is incredibly popular, and the game Mario Kart World has been a big reason why. It’s a fresh, open-world version of the classic Mario Kart that’s really enjoyable. However, some players found it difficult to simply race karts with friends on the Switch 2. Luckily, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds offered a solution earlier this year. While it wasn’t initially available on the Switch 2, that’s about to change – it will be released in just a few weeks.
Nintendo and Sega have revealed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will be available on the Switch 2 starting December 4th, 2025. While it’s coming to Switch 2 a few months after its release on other systems, fans will appreciate having it just in time for the holidays, especially on a console expected to be very popular this year.
What Makes Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Different?

Similar to Mario Kart, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is a kart racing game. But instead of the expansive open-world features found in Mario Kart World, it focuses on traditional racing. You won’t explore a world map or search for side quests – you simply choose your character and compete in three-lap races to win.
Unlike previous Mario Kart games, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds lets players really customize their experience. Each character has unique stats that influence how vehicles handle, and you can also mix and match parts from unlocked cars to build truly custom rides. If you enjoy fine-tuning every detail, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the racing game to watch in 2025.
Earning all the vehicles and characters in CrossWorlds can be a bit repetitive, as there are only 24 tracks but a lot of content to unlock, making the Grand Prix mode feel somewhat monotonous. However, if you enjoy classic kart racing, CrossWorlds offers a lot to appreciate.
As a huge Sega fan, I’m loving how they’ve taken a page from Smash Bros. and included so many guest characters! Of course, you can still play as all your favorites from the Sonic universe, like Amy and Zazz, but they’ve also added characters like the Ghosts from Pac-Man, Ichiban Kasuga from Like a Dragon, and even Joker from Persona! It’s wild to see SpongeBob and Patrick from SpongeBob Squarepants racing too! I was hoping they could get even more characters from Nickelodeon Kart Racers 3: Slime Speedway, but hey, maybe we’ll get some as DLC in the future!
Good news for CrossWorlds players on Switch! If you already own the game, you won’t have to buy it again to play on Switch 2. Upgrading between December 4th and December 11th, 2025, will only cost $5. After that week-long period, the upgrade will be $10, which is still a fair price.
