One of Nintendo’s Biggest Series Would Be Gone Without This 13 Year Old Game

Nintendo is a hugely popular and successful video game company, largely because of its many famous franchises. While characters like Mario and Link immediately made some games hits, others took time to build a following. Often, a single, standout game is responsible for a series becoming as well-known as it is. Looking at one of my personal favorite series, it’s clear how it achieved such widespread popularity.

I’ve spent a lot of time playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons on my Switch, and it’s been incredibly popular with many others. However, the success of New Horizons really built on the foundation laid by Animal Crossing: New Leaf on the Nintendo 3DS. While the series’ huge popularity might have been unexpected, New Leaf was key in establishing Animal Crossing as one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf Was Revolutionary on 3DS

When Animal Crossing: New Leaf came out on the Nintendo 3DS, it stood out from earlier games because it put you in a position of power. Instead of just being a new resident, you became the mayor. This seemingly small change completely transformed the game, letting you shape the town’s growth and making you feel truly invested in its future. It felt like the game finally let players fully express their creativity, and it was fantastic.

Players could now personalize their towns like never before thanks to new features like public works projects and town ordinances. They could add things like bridges, benches, and fountains, and even change how the town functioned with rules about shop hours and residents’ routines. These tools sparked creativity and made each town feel special. While these ideas are common in the series now, they were a big innovation in 2013 and laid the foundation for Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

I have a lot of great memories of playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf and earning Bells to improve my town. The game always gave me something new to work towards, and its easy accessibility – I always had my 3DS handy – made it a daily habit for me and many others. Animal Crossing: New Leaf was a huge success for the Nintendo 3DS, selling over 13 million copies worldwide, and a big part of that success was Isabelle, the charming and helpful assistant mayor who quickly became a beloved Nintendo character.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Wouldn’t Be Possible Without It

While Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a massive hit, it’s easy to forget how much it built upon the foundation laid by New Leaf. Almost every key feature in New Horizons – like being able to customize your town and express your creativity – actually originated in the earlier 3DS game. This, combined with the game launching during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, contributed to New Horizons becoming one of the best-selling Nintendo Switch games ever.

With New Horizons, players had even greater freedom to design their islands, thanks to features like terraforming and a wide range of decorations. Although these tools were much more sophisticated than those in the Nintendo 3DS games, the basic idea stayed the same: players wanted to actively create their surroundings, not just exist within them. New Leaf had already shown Nintendo that many players craved this kind of customization, and New Horizons built on that foundation with even more options.

Without the success of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Nintendo might not have invested as heavily in New Horizons. New Leaf proved the Animal Crossing series could become as important to Nintendo as franchises like The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. While New Horizons improved and expanded on the gameplay, it clearly built upon the foundation laid by the 3DS version.

A New Animal Crossing Life on Nintendo Switch 2

With Nintendo moving into the next generation of consoles – the Switch 2 – fans are excited to see what’s coming next for their favorite games. While Animal Crossing: New Horizons received an update for the new system, it’s just a taste of what’s to come before a completely new game is announced. Expectations are high, considering how much the series has changed and improved over the past ten years. I’m particularly interested in seeing how Nintendo will take customization options even further in future titles.

Players now expect a lot of control over how their towns and islands look and feel. The next Nintendo Switch game needs to add exciting new things while still keeping the relaxing, familiar routines that players already love. Adding more activities and ways to connect with villagers would make the strong sense of community even better. Allowing for larger towns with more residents would also be a significant improvement for the series.

I’m so excited for the next Animal Crossing game, but I think it really owes a lot to New Leaf. That game was a turning point – it showed Nintendo how to bring Animal Crossing to a way bigger audience without losing what made it special. Seriously, New Leaf gave us Isabelle, let us customize things so much more, and basically laid the groundwork for New Horizons becoming the massive hit it was. Even now, thirteen years later, you can still see its influence everywhere. I honestly think without New Leaf, Animal Crossing might not be as popular as it is today!
