After winning five Emmys, the popular medical drama The Pitt is scheduled to return in 2026, streaming on HBO Max. The second season will pick up several months after the events of the first, taking place over the busy Fourth of July weekend – meaning the hospital’s emergency room will be incredibly crowded. There’s also a possibility that some of Noah Wyle’s former ER colleagues might appear, and one has expressed interest in reuniting with him – a development I’m really hoping comes to fruition.
Noah Wyle played Dr. John Carter on ER for its first eleven seasons, with additional appearances in seasons twelve and fifteen. He wasn’t planning on returning to medical dramas until The Pitt project arose, bringing him back together with producers John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill. Many fans are hoping for a reunion with his former ER co-stars, and they’re not alone – Maura Tierney, who played Abby Lockhart, told TODAY she’d love to join any potential project.
Sure, I love all those — I worked with everyone over there.
It might be difficult to schedule with Tierney currently starring in Law & Order, but it’s not surprising she’d be open to an ER reunion. Last season, she already worked with two former colleagues – Eriq La Salle directed an episode of Law & Order featuring Mekhi Phifer. Given the strong connection between her ER character Abby and Carter, fans would love to see Tierney and Wyle share the screen again in any capacity.

You can stream The Pitt exclusively on HBO Max, with plans starting at $10.99 per month for the Basic With Ads option. An HBO Max subscription unlocks thousands of movies, shows, documentaries, and more. See the deal here.
If actress Tierney appeared on The Pitt, there are tons of interesting roles she could take on. It would be cool if her character had a history with Wyle’s Dr. Robby – maybe they were old friends or even a former couple. She could reprise a medical role like a nurse or doctor, or if her Law & Order commitments allow, even just make a quick appearance as a patient. Honestly, any role she played on the show would be fantastic.

Wyle has talked about the possibility of having his former ER colleagues and other famous people appear on The Pitt. He admitted it’s very appealing, but he worries their presence might overshadow the show. However, that doesn’t rule it out completely, and with Tierney also expressing interest, it’s possible we could see some big names join the show.
While a reunion of the cast of ER at The Pitt isn’t happening, the second season still promises plenty of exciting moments. The series is expected to return on January 8th, so fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out what happens next – but a little patience is still needed!
