After a decade away, the popular spy thriller from Prime Video – known for its original stars Hugh Laurie, Tom Hiddleston, and Olivia Colman – is returning, and it’s expected to be even better than before. That’s saying something, considering it already has a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
After a ten-year wait, season two of The Night Manager – based on John le Carré’s novel – is here. The show centers on Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston), a former soldier now working as a hotel porter, who is secretly recruited to investigate Richard Roper, a powerful businessman suspected of illegal arms dealing and connections to intelligence agencies. To get close to Roper, Pine must go undercover and become a criminal himself, all while keeping his dangerous double life hidden from his coworkers and loved ones.
What Will Season 2 Bring To The Table?
Season two arrives January 11th, taking place several years after the first season’s events. Now going by the name Alex Goodwin and working as a minor M16 officer, Pine finds himself caught up in a Colombian arms smuggling operation, pulling him back into the world of espionage. Olivia Colman will reprise her role as spymaster Angela Burr, and Camilla Morrone joins the cast as businesswoman Roxana Bolaños. Hugh Laurie will return as an executive producer, but won’t be appearing on screen, given what happened to his character.
The first season of the show was highly acclaimed. NPR’s Eric Deggans highlighted the unique protagonist, noting that he’s a charming, intelligent, and seductive spy who doesn’t rely on typical action hero tropes – he even loses a fight! Sophie Gilbert of the Atlantic described the show’s overall aesthetic and star Tom Hiddleston’s performance as a sophisticated and captivating ‘audition’ for the role of James Bond.
Fans of the first season will be happy to hear this is great news! The upcoming season looks promising, with new cast members and Laurie now also serving as an executive producer.
