One of the Best Animated Movie Trilogies of All Time Is Now on Netflix

Netflix recently lost a lot of popular family movies. All of the Shrek films, along with several Despicable Me and Minions movies, were removed from the service. This was disappointing for families, but Netflix did add three popular movies from another well-loved animated series at the beginning of December.

Starting December 1st, Netflix added the first three Kung Fu Panda movies, letting subscribers follow Po’s entire story—from a humble noodle cook to a kung fu master. You can now stream Kung Fu Panda, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Kung Fu Panda 3 on Netflix, but Kung Fu Panda 4 is currently exclusive to Peacock.

Released in 2008, the first Kung Fu Panda movie became one of DreamWorks Animation’s most important successes, alongside films like Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon. Starring Jack Black as the voice of Po, the movie launched a huge franchise that expanded into films, TV shows, video games, and more.

If you’re new to the Kung Fu Panda series, you’re in for a real treat, and Kung Fu Panda 2 is a standout film. Many consider it one of the best animated sequels ever made, perhaps only surpassed by Toy Story 2. It’s packed with stunning animation and thrilling action, offering a surprisingly rich and engaging experience.

What’s New on Netflix?

While several family-friendly movies recently became available on Netflix, the biggest additions announced were the first three Kung Fu Panda films. Netflix had mentioned these titles in its December newsletter, giving viewers a heads-up. But on December 1st, the streaming service also surprised everyone by adding the Rio movies, which came from the now-closed Blue Sky Studios.

Both Rio and Rio 2 were added to Netflix on Monday and have quickly become popular. As of Tuesday, Rio is the second most-watched movie on the platform, only behind the new release Troll 2, and Rio 2 is currently in fourth place.

It’s surprising, but the Rio movies are actually getting more views than the Kung Fu Panda movies on Netflix, at least in their first 24 hours. Considering Kung Fu Panda is a much more well-known series, this is unexpected. However, the fact that Rio wasn’t as widely available on other streaming services like Disney+ and Hulu might have helped boost its popularity.

I’m really excited about the new movies on Netflix, and I can’t wait to hear what everyone else thinks! Let’s chat about them over on the ComicBook Forum – come join the discussion!
