One of the Best DC Comic Adaptations Is Climbing the Streaming Charts (And It Does Every Year)

Since HBO Max and Warner Bros. Discovery are connected, it’s the go-to streaming service for all things DC. You can find classic films like the original Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve and Tim Burton’s Batman, plus a huge selection of animated DC movies. That includes Watchmen (both the film and series), every movie in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), and the new Superman and Creature Commandos projects from James Gunn. It’s not surprising, then, that a DC movie is currently a top performer on HBO Max’s worldwide watch list.

You might expect this to be a Batman or even James Gunn’s Superman film, but surprisingly, it’s actually V for Vendetta from 2005, featuring Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving.

What Is V for Vendetta About & Why Is It Surging on the Worldwide Chart?

V for Vendetta centers around Evey Hammond, who lives in a future Britain ruled by a cruel, fascist government. She’s helped by a mysterious masked rebel known only as “V,” who is determined to overthrow the country’s oppressive leader.

V wears a Guy Fawkes mask and, mirroring the historical figure, plans to destroy Parliament. But unlike the original Gunpowder Plot – a failed attempt to kill King James – V intends to succeed. His goal isn’t just destruction, but to inspire a nation oppressed by a selfish and power-hungry ruler to fight for their freedom.

Although the author of the original graphic novel, Alan Moore, disliked the movie because it simplified the complex political themes of fascism versus anarchism into a more conventional battle between neoconservatism and liberalism, it remains incredibly popular with viewers. Its fanbase has continued to grow over time, particularly around November 5th – a significant date in the film linked to the historical Gunpowder Plot.

As November 5th rolled around again, interest in the movie increased, leading to a rise in views on HBO Max. It climbed to become the eighth most popular film on the service on November 6th, and then moved up to seventh place the following day.

Rounding out the Top 10 movies are Weapons, It, It Chapter Two, The Curse of the Necklace, The Substance, Life (which has gained a large following over time), The Martian, The List, and This Is 40. Which one will you be watching? While November 5th has passed, it’s always a good time to watch V for Vendetta!
