The TV revival trend is at its peak, with classic shows like “King of the Hill,” “Battlestar Galactica,” and “Dexter” returning to our screens in new iterations many years after their original run. Many more are set to follow, such as “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair” on Disney+, a spinoff of “The Office” titled “The Paper” on Peacock, and Hulu’s planned reboot of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” Now, it looks like one of the greatest fantasy shows ever made could be next in line as the series gears up to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
The television series titled “Xena: Warrior Princess” gained immense popularity between 1995 and 2001, revolutionizing TV landscapes through its pioneering portrayal of a strong female protagonist, embodied by Lucy Lawless’ Xena character. This influential show paved the way for numerous other action series led by women in subsequent years. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly before the 30th anniversary of “Xena” on September 4, co-creator Rob Tapert hinted at plans to reboot the show as “Xena“. Yet, he cautioned that this revival might not meet fans’ expectations in a straightforward manner.
He noted that if a new series was made featuring Xena and Gabrielle, it wouldn’t be exactly like their original counterparts, Lucy and Renee [O’Connor]. Instead, he suggested it would be similar to how Star Trek has been reimagined, a fresh take on that universe. He emphasized that whatever the new version will be, it’s bound to be different, which he found exciting. Thirty years after the original series, he stressed, any new iteration must necessarily be different.
As a longtime enthusiast of film, I’ve always been hesitant about reboots. With over 130 episodes under my belt, I don’t feel like there are still untold stories waiting for me. Maybe it’s my lack of creative thinking, but I didn’t want to recast Lucy and Renee in a new version. But, three decades after Xena first graced our screens, I find myself intrigued by the idea of revisiting this iconic character. Details about the potential reboot are still vague, with me only knowing that a script might be circulating within the next 3 to 6 months. Fingers crossed!
Why A Xena Reboot Is Needed
The hit television series “Xena: Warrior Princess,” produced during the ’90s, continues to be highly regarded for its enduring influence on TV. The show centered around Lawless’ character Xena, a transformed warrior princess, who battled evil, liberated people from tyranny and oppression, and was accompanied by O’Conner’s Gabrielle. During its time, it played a crucial role in popular culture and set a lasting precedent for female action heroes. By delving into topics like feminism, diversity, and the intricacies of female relationships, it pioneered a more profound portrayal of such dynamics, particularly influencing mainstream media’s representation of LGBTQ+ characters through the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle.
In a recent statement, Bruce Campbell, known for his role as King of Thieves Autolycus in the series, noted that the themes portrayed in Xena remain highly applicable today. He emphasized that the show explores ideas such as loyalty, friendships, and intricate relationships, even within an action-oriented context. In essence, Campbell suggested that Xena’s message is that it’s acceptable to have complex relationships in a series primarily focused on action.
A reboot might potentially bring back the groundbreaking success of the original series, capturing the interest of a fresh group of television audiences.
Presently, enthusiasts will need to stay tuned to find out if a revival of the much-loved series, Xena, takes place. Earlier attempts at rebooting Xena stalled at NBC. However, you can enjoy all six seasons of Xena: Warrior Princess by streaming them on Amazon’s Prime Video.
